Just been out to my van to find some scrote has had a pop at the locks again, thankfully the dead locks kept them out but I think now is the time to get an alarm. Does anyone have any recommendations for a fitter Croydon/Surrey area?

Had the van done over roughly this time last year, and again the dead bolts kept them out but so much damage it was written off, the doors were so badly damaged they wouldnt open, so it was taken into the insurance companies garage where the doors were forced open and loads of stuff went missing. Then about a month later had my garage done over and all my scrap nicked. The garage had to have a new door because of the damage and now the bloody thing is like fort knox, so many locks and alarm that it takes me ages to get into it. Just feel really peed off now with just trying to keep my stuff safe, already bring my tools in each night, dont see what more I can do, apart from an alarm on the van I guess.

So any recommendations on someone local to me would be great.

Thanks, just feel so bloody peed off. And to add insult to injury any payout from an insurance company has to be declared as income! Just dont want the hassle I had this time last year, it was so stressful and caused a few sleepless nights. Time to bite the bullet and get a very noisy alarm fitted!

Can we help? Sure if we had whip round get forum thugs flown over they could lie in wait in van? Only stipulation is it must be on video .

How I would love that, if I caught anyone near my van or home they would find themselves in a very awkward situation. Police were great last time, but they said that there are loads of commercial vehicles being done over locally and there is not much they can do except to advise on crime prevention. I already have 2 dogs which look the part but are both rehomed staffies, so as soft as anything, one now totally deaf as a post and the other is scared of his own shadow.

CH4 already done the security light, and I park the van outside my garage, I live on a corner of a road so the garage is down the side road, no room on the drive for 2 cars, so cant do the shingle. I apparently live in a 'good' and 'low crime' area for what its worth.

Gas Man, did you fit it yourself? I hate tinkering with cars and vans but if not too complicated would give it a go?

Gas man, thanks for that link, seems they are not too far from me and they install so will have a chat with them tomorrow.

Being as I'm originally from the area in question there's always an outside chance I know the light fingered docks attempting the break ins.

I definitely know a lot more people who'd like to get their hands on them.........

You from round here Croppie? I know I am not the only one who would like to, its not just the nicking that pees me off, its the cost of getting the damage fixed when they try and crowbar doors off. Surely if they are going to thieve they could do it with some finesse and skill.

Ah yes, well I have heard that a fair bit of the crime we get here comes from over the Croydon border! Actually I have a few friends who still live up there and they are what I call decent people, but from what I gather it is getting rougher. Up at Fieldway a bit for the merchant there. Warlingham is supposed to be a 'nice' area, well apart from bodies floating about in wells.....

I swear by a plain van with no signwriting as that it's just an advert to thieves. So is a pipe rack on the roof. You need no windows in the back and a solid bulkhead. And no sign saying 'no tools overnight' cos that means 'tools during the day' or tools probably in overnight cos who can be bothered to remove them'

If your van looks like an empty parcel delivery van you will attract less scum than a van that says 'I'm owned by a plumber and full of expensive tools and copper'

Also do a scrap run every night. If it's not at home it can't get nicked. For the same reason I never hold boilers or get them delivered. I collect from the merchant and it's bolted to a customers wall asap. Very unlikely to get stolen while it's my responsibility.

My Dad says the same, but for me its a double edges sword, already got so much work from the van, its like a big advert. I am really lazy with scrap so that is something I could easily rectify.

Lovely area that Croppie

It used to be. Was always rough but there was the community spirit, we looked after our own.

I used to drink in the Randall Tavern when it was called the Bunkers Knob. My dad used Plumbwell a lot before he retired.

Dont know what it is called now, in fact not even sure it was still open when I last went there. Still use Plumbwell a fair bit, they have a few branches now, a big one on the Purley way with a bathroom showroom. Often think they could have re thought the name though, they are B & P plumbing. Customers often ask me to repeat that slowly......
