After hearing today Vaillant are going to switch over to downward firing burners and aluminium hex. I can't think of one boiler nice to work on that has one. Why fix what's not broke? Apparently it's a result of magnetite and scale build up even after propper flushing and chemical treatment. Never had such problems myself. On the plus side the rubber flue collars are on there way back!!!

The only reason I use Vaillant is because of the stainless hex.
Can't belive they ate going to alumininium?

Apparently the downwards firing burner is the reason Glow-Worm don't do an LPG boiler! Although greedy Vaillant will make an exception for their own baby.....

so with them pinching customers off you and kicking warranty work out because theres a tiny speck of dirt in the system and then billing your customer by taking their card details in advance, they are now basically turning it into a ferroli, simple answer, fit Baxi

Saw it today with my own eyes in a 418 apparently the 6 and 8 series will follow suit to form the Mk3 ecotec range. They also have a compact kitchen cupboard combi coming out with rear flue option. And an all singing all dancing Vaillant ecogreen. Time will tell.......

always knew that shaped spiral hex is prone to Sludge... Each spiral must be like a mini sump for magnite to settle & harden!

well, been fitting baxi duotecs for 13 years, same hex as valiant,no issues with sludge ever, all of them are still working

I've not had issues Potterton, Baxi, Ariston, Broag, Vaillant all have their problems but not with the main hex. Seems strange ideal have now gone to the giovanni hex with their flagship model completely away from their downfire range.

I like Baxi,s but they annoy me. They're the size of a small car, the flues off centre, your not allowed to show any white on the flue (a real pain when you want to pass it under an over hang) and the integral timer is comically bad. And they always weep from somewhere!

everything annoys you though

Surprised to hear that Vaillant are moving away from the proven Stainless HEX. I must have fitted a couple of hundred over the years & never had any problem in that respect, or many problems at all TBH.
That said I remember all the talk around 11 years ago was that Worcester aluminium heat exchangers would rot away within a few years but I've not heard of any that have come to grief. Always a bit disconcerting to find a Worcester condensate trap full of casting sand year after year though.
I suspect this move has more to do with manufacturing costs than anything else, oh, & pleased to hear Vaillant are ditching those horrible plastic flue collars, truly awful things.

Aren't the spares for viessmann expensive though?

Whenever I have needed spares they have been difficult to get hold of. You also seem to need the serial number of the appliance and not just the GC number to find exactly what part you need as the parts in the boiler seem to change quite a lot.

they dont use gc no but with phones these days just take a pic of the data plate and your done

and can have a whole boiler in pieces/spares within a couple of days and boilers next day (my main viessmann office is in telford)

and you know the germans always upgrading / tweaking things

It's bloody embarrassing ! You feel like a right thief telling them a repair is x amount, when the part is the major part of the cost.

Yes I know the feeling... I also think the customer probably thinks we're getting a massive mark up etc, if only that was the case lol!
