OK!!, to a barn conversion, installed new toilet on a septic tank, dergo on soil stack, concealed cystern and all that, nice job, but there is a foul smell returning back up the pan, can anyone help with a solution, or have heard of this before.

I have heard of a faulty pan allowing foul smells back up. Is there another vent other than the durgo?

Mike

Durgo's don't allow for back pressure they only open if there is a vacuum. So if the tank does not have an open vent elsewhere, then you are trying to put water in a tank full of air which will probably give you back pressure problems and smells.

Stands to reason really, doesn't it?

If you can only blow into a sealed drainage system at some point it may want to blow back.
If you look at the Bldgs Regs Approved document H for drainage it tells you somewhere about the ventilation requirements for septic tanks and the use of AAV's. They are not a direct replacement for an open vent in every circumstance.

Personally, I have found, you seem to get less trouble from an open vent system than from using AAV's. Of course AAV's are handy and save time and pipe I know. But I feel its best stick to their use sparingly where there is no alternative.

i have had 2 similar experiences, in one case bernies answer was the correct one.
in my own home mikes answer was the correct one!!

a solution to try first would be to strap boss a smaller bore pipe in, just below the diego valve. then take an inch and a half pipe from my strap boss outside and up some.

good luck

Try a 110mm in line trap with cleaning acess,
then on the cess pitt put a vent pipe in with correct terminal
