My drinking night is now a Wednesday (don't ask!) and on a Thursday morning I'm in my van driving god knows where and worried if I had a prang I will be breathalysed and if found over the limit I could face 6 months in prison/12 month ban/5 grand fine or all of the above so was thinking of getting a breathalyser gizmo like this, anyone got one? I reckon £42 is money well spent to save loosing my licence.

Different people have different tolerances to alcohol and most people who have a few drinks every night are always over the limit because they are in-effect, keeping their alcohol level topped up and not giving it a chance to clear from their system. I know someone who got banned after having one, yes - one can of Stella. He was driving to the off-license to get more when he was stopped and told to blow.

Turns out that one can was just enough to tip his alcohol level over the limit.

If I'm driving the next day I won't have any alcohol.

If you're worried you might be close to the limit in the morning's I think a breathalyser kit is a good idea. What you going to do if you're about to set off to a job and the breathalyser says 'no'?

Here's a link about driving the morning after a drink.

and your still ****ed the next day, work to do and your meter goes red lights, what then?

I think if anyone needs to carry a breathalyser then they need to seriously look at their drinking habits. If you think you are over then the chances are you are.

It's not worth having a skin full if you're driving the next day. Any more than a couple of pints and you stand a good chance of still being over the limit the next morning. Is having a drink really worth risking your livelihood over?

Things are really hectic at the moment and I'm working 7 days so kind of every day is a school night, I can have my last drink at say midnight and drink plenty of water and then at 10:00am just check alcohol levels. If its red I'll go to sleep for a couple of hours.

My new girlfriend drags me out every Wednesday and then keeps me up all night, so on Thursday I'm wrecked to the point of sleeping on the bathroom floor for an hour at work (no joke). Gotta get my life sorted.

Drinking water to speed up the process of removing alcohol from the system is a myth. There is NOTHING you can do to sober up quicker.

Hi, you may say I'm a lil expert in this sort of thing

1. these breathalysers are not accurate, they had some really bad reviews
2. there is a way to work it out, each unit takes an hour to get out of your body (sleeping does not speed it up), so to work out the units you must only drink 8 units and finnish drinking at 12pm. this will make you sober by 8am ready for work.

Roughly 4 pints?

My new girlfriend keeps me up all night.

At least you sweat it out in the night rather than in a customers house - 1 unit = 1 hour is what my police man neighbour advises. I drink faster than everyone else and have no cut off once I get started, so 50/50 shandy works for me, that way I can squeez in 8 pints, avoid a hangover, save some money and the wee man still works when I get to bed!!! There's no harm having a breath test kicking around though if it makes you feel better.

Load of rubbish. Everyone has a different metabolic rate, a different sized liver in different conditions with differing amounts of enzymes and different bodily reactions to depleted blood sugar (which alcohol causes)

An hour a unit may be accurate for some people but it can take two or more hours per unit. You just never know...be warned

There is no acurate way to work it out, but this is the advice you will find on NHS and Police websites:

Alcohol Units and BAC - Blood Alcohol Content

Blood Alcohol Content Calculator | Alcohol and Driving | Alcohol Units and BAC

Even the smallest amounts of alcohol can impair a drivers judgment. The rate at which alcohol increases a persons BAC (blood alcohol concentration) can vary according to numerous factors which include the following:-

  • An individuals metabolism rate
  • A persons sex
  • Various health issues
  • Amount of food in the stomach and small intestine
  • A persons weight
  • How long they have been drinking
On average, after the first 30 mins to 1 hour for the alcohol to be fully absorbed, your body will break down one unit of alcohol per hour. Each unit will increase your BAC by 15mg (up to 30mg for women). The UK BAC limit is 80mg per 100ml blood, allowing you to drink a pint to a pint and a half of average strength beer, or one glass of wine at 13% without exceeding the drink-drive limit.
Only 10 minutes after having a drink, 50% of the alcohol will be in your bloodstream.
What is a unit?

A UK unit is 10ml or 8 grams of pure alcohol (also called ethanol). The number of units in a drink depends on what you're drinking - how strong it is and how much there is. Some manufacturers are starting to label their products with unit values so that you can work out how much you are drinking more easily.
To find out how many units are in an alcoholic drink:
Multiply the volume in milliliters (one pint is 568ml; a standard glass of wine 175ml) by %ABV then divide the result by 1000.
For example, if you order a pint of strong lager at 8% ABV:

1 pint (568ml) X 8 = 4,544 Divided by 1,000 = 4.544, or 4.5 units
WARNING: There is no safe way to calculate your BAC as it relies on so many factors. The only safe and reliable way is to use a reliable breathalyser or even better still, do not drink and drive!!
