Sorry if this is stupid question.

We have waste water pump in our first floor flat (not sure what it is called)? It failed and wouldn't drain waste water from shower, we found out too late and the water had drained through the ceiling into the property below us.

Probably a bit of stretch but we'd like to know if there is way of knowing if the pump fails or is off for some reason so we stop using water. Can the water be stopped automatically?

Thanks

Some of them have an alarm that goes off when the pump fails.
- Optional extra when purchasing pump.

Optional extra costs @ 20% of the pump.
That's why plumbers or Property Owners don't want them installed.

If a property needs it, it has to be installed.

There's no other way though, is there?

There are 2 ways to know a pump has failed.
1/ the way you found out.
2/ put an alarm on the pump. ( hopefully the alarm works )

It doesn't always work that way.
Property owners. Landlords, Builders, Developers are always looking at reducing costs at whoever's detriment down the track.
Plumbers also don't know or don't allow for extra things required on some jobs.

Who knows what the situation was on your job / place
