Baxi 551, Bermuda LFE Spillage Test

Hi all, hoping for a bit of direction here.

Baxi 551 G.C. 44 077 48 with a Bermuda LFE fire G.C. 32 077 10, there's nothing in either manual (unbelievably the customer has both) for the location of the smoke match when doing a fire spillage test. I've checked the LFE 3 (G.C. 37 077 12) manual and that says to place said match behind the fire in the hood [DLMURL="http://www.partsarena.com/baxi/System/DATA/Dx/DS1/installation/2162/I03-2162/I03-2162.htm"]Baxi Bermuda LFE 3[/DLMURL] fig9, now am I correct in thinking that it would be the same for the LFE?

Don't they have their own arrangement of Down Draught Divcerter/ dilution chamber on the back of the fire? I'm sure that's the place to put the smoke plume. Left hand side ..... hmmmm there may even be a square metal tube there? I'm raking my grey matter here mind ... 🙂

Not been to a BBU fire with an LFE a the front yet, will be good to hear the opinions. If in doubt, do one from everywhere, if it passes, then jobs a good un. If it fails, look harder. Lol!

I could get to the DDD easily and it passed that test without a problem, same for the smoke bomb on the BBU, didn't like the match in above the coals though hence the question. Just checked both manuals on parts arena

and difinitetly no direction in either of them.

At the rear of the fire is the draught diverter hood, place the smoke match in there. See the odd one of these every other week.

this appliance as far as i am aware(and i have seen/worked on EVERY burmuda they made,to me this sounds like a botched Frankenstein cut and shut affair that should be made ID ring baxi i am sure they will be shocked as well,the 551 is at least 30 year old now no inset fire was ever fitted to a 551,552,or 401

Hi Gasman, the LFE isn't an inset, it's a sloped radiant with a covering of coals and specified for the 551 or the 401

Interesting to note that apart from it needing a good clean and the builders opening needing sealing it's in very good condition, probably still got years left in it

For my sins I use to fit them Mark ... Original GF and the LFE wall mounted and the other one that was wall mounted and looked like the Amercan Footballers Helmet ... Forgotten the name of that one! All on the 552 & 401 ... I'm older than you though matey ... lol They even made the new fire fronts compatable with the 551 if I'm not mistaken! Soon to be things of the past though eh?

yes i read this while quite knackerd last night of course there is a lfe and a 2 and a lfe 3 super i thought it was a ilfe which did not exist on a 551 my bad should read posts while awake

Test it at the flue hood

Apologies for raising an old thread but I have a problem with a Baxi Bermuda LFE5 (gas fire) and 57/4 boiler combination.

The device has been banned/capped because the fire failed a spillage test.

I'm concerned that the test was not carried out in the right place - the engineer tested from behind the body of the gas fire and on the left side. For approx. 5 seconds the smoke flowed away but then emerged from the top of the device.

I have the manuals, which the engineer read, only to discover that there is no mention of where to conduct the flue test.

This thread seems to suggest that the test should be in the flue hood, i.e. above the coals so that the smoke exits the fire enclosure through the slot in the top of the hood.

Can anyone confirm that is correct?

Contacted Baxi who sent a diagram showing where the spillage test should be conducted. It is in the manual the engineer read.

The test site is on the right, between the fire and boiler units, at the 'fire flue spigot'.

The test should use a smoke match, not a smoke bomb/pellet as my engineer did.

All doors and windows closed - mine were open.

Baxi representative wrote, "The results [as conducted] would be inconclusive and the test would need to be done correctly, as per the installation manual."

I shall ask the engineer to repeat the test correctly. The installation may be faulty, probably the flue, but it might not!

But there are a lot of numpties running around with a gas badge who don't know basics and can't read a mi.
