Boss White question

View the thread, titled "Boss White question" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

i see so its a string that you tie randomly around 'roughened' threads... sounds easy too use?

do you recommend PTFE around the nipple? (Iam assuming the nipple is the bit of pipe that goes into the valve?)

think I will go with that stuff - less messy than paste and I imagine with a paste I would have to wait for it to dry/set before filling the system??

EDIT: says on Boss White tub its used as a lubricant? which i found odd as I was told to use it as a sealer hehe

Its a doddle to use , paste is fine have used boss white and still use boss white on screwed iron .

you a odd jobber or trying to sort your own house?

You do use it like that yes. Don't follow the threads just go around a joint randomly. The nipple is the metal stubb that you screw into the radiator. The valve then sits between that stubb (nipple) and the copper pipe with a nut and olive either side of the valve.

I thought they were called "tails"..?

heres how ours go..

rad..
bit that screws in to rad which I thought was called a 'tail' (rubber seal so didnt need PTFE)
Valve screws into tail...(also has a seal so no PTFE)
pipe goes into Compression end (with olive on pipe) <- its here where the leak comes from the threads

ok, heres another issue... where to buy it from lol... seems our local 'sheds' QnB and FixScrew dont sell it?

thanks

All this talk of nipples on a school night! Drain it down, rip the old valve out, bin it, buy a new one, tape the tail with ptfe tape, paste the thread, refill and bobs your uncle.

And ask the guy in the merchants to show you what to do with it in front of you. Its such a simple job its unreal.

lol @ nipples

- its not an old valve - its brand spanking new and so is the radiator and pipework.

so it IS a Tail then? are their two names for it? nipple/tail..?

guess I will just have to order some loctite 55 online from fleabay or summit as our local sheds dont seem to stock it

thanks again guys - nice friendly banter/advice on here... unlike DIYnot which can get a bit aggressive IMO 🙂

Enough with the nipples! And as for aggressive it has it's moments on here but the mods stop the fun before we all have our say!

What about getting a plumber in to fix it properly

I was waiting for someone to come up with this...!!

ive installed loads before and just because one of these compression joints is being awkward means I have to throw in the towel and get a plumber in to do the exact same thing Iam gunna do...lol... no thanks.

No offence mate but this is not rocket science
If you have tried all you said I'd be thinking its something faulty with tail or nut or olive get a new one
