What a day it turned out to be! Spending three hours trying to drill a new boss con into an old cast iron stack after being quite cocky in my own head as the last few have been a breeze.

Been through four hole saws as well! Not cheap ones either. One bosch, one CK and two starrets. All bi metal and drilling on slow speed.

So I'm after some advice as to where I can go next. I'm 60% through roughly. And cutting out a section isn't an option.

Cheers

keep going cast is made out of the crap left over so you will have hard and soft spots and you have hit a hard one, dont force it keep light pressure else you may crack it, and starrets all day for me aswell as some cutting oil

Try using a diamond core cutting bit I have a professional set of Armeg core bits not cheap but had them over 8yrs and still as good as when i bought them. If your just after something as a one off try, 365 drill bits

I was always told to not use oils when drilling into cast? Was that just a personal preference?

I had one a couple of weeks ago - destroyed two Bosch holesaws so I tried these for the hell of it - Titan Diamond Grit-Edged Holesaw Kit 11 Pieces | Holesaw Sets | NoLinkingToThis

Absolutely flew through!

Ahh I even have that set on the van for when needing to cut through tiles! These really worth a try are they? Slow speed again?

Definitely! I was really surprised - I thought they'd be carp at that price but was desperate. Slow speed, no water or oil. Went through really easily.
