Masood

Went to do a tap change plus a few other little odds and sods this morning for a customer I've done work for once before. No problem with payment last time at all.

SO, did his list of jobs, gave him the bill only to be told "I've got no money till the 22nd, can I give you a post-dated cheque?" Fecking cheeky sod! So I told him I don't cheques but would take a card payment. He has no money in the account to pay by debit card. And he has no credit cards.

Had no choice but to take the cheque. Fecking bold as brass, not even apologetic or embarrassed!

What would you have done??

A bit cheeky and a bit strange he has no cash at all but I would not mind waiting for the cash as it's not in the thousands. Unless you state before hand payment on completion. It usually takes me a month to invoice as I hate paperwork

How rude! I has it years back on a boiler change. Did the job middle of the month and she didn't get paid till the 30th. Some people seem to think its normal. Plums.

I'm only interested in minimising my grief. I don't care about 'the principle of the thing' and I have zero desire to inconvenience myself to make a point or punish someone else's bad behaviour.

I would view it as 'post-date cheque appears best available opportunity to get paid for job. take it. be polite and friendly whilst making it obvious I am suprised and would have preferred otherwise via facial expressions, body-language and a few choice phrases. Then chalk it up to an unusual occurence and move on'

So... same as you by looks of it

It's not the wait I'm bothered about - as you say, 30 days is not unusual. It's the barefaced cheek of just assuming I'd be OK with it - most domestic customers I don't invoice - they pay on completion.

I hate cheques and can't wait till there abolished, the time factors not an issue either but I agree with Masood as the bare faced cheek is what would've peed me off, the custard should've at least had the polite manners to ask you if paying this way would be acceptable when he phoned up to book your services, anything else is a pure hard neck,, least you'll know next time they phone masood, ( hope you don't get a bouncy cheque lol )

I love cheques, you can add them up. Bank them in a way you don't go over any thresholds.

I had the exast opposite today. Bloke paid me in cash before I'd started. Happens quite a lot actually. Usually I refuse and say, "Let's wait until I've finished shall we?" Because it just seemed weird but I've since decided to go along with it incase they infer that you're not convinced you'll manage to do the work.

I think its more to do with you've said x amount for the job and he doesnt want the price rising if the job turns into a pig.

I had similar thing the other day, quoted for and fitted new boiler.
Explicitly informed customer that it is payable in full on completion.
So started and finished same day.
customer pulls £220 quid out and says can i come back wednesday for the rest.
I said well....what choice have i got......basically subbed the *******s a cost of a boiler and install and controls.

I went back and they did have the cash waiting but i cant deny - it was a worry...

Just cash it in already & it will get paid! You aren't really allowed to post date cheques & they rely on the receiver not to cash it in early...

Seriously? I didn't know that! Mind you, he said he has no money till the 20th so it would probably bounce!

had the same a few times, just scowl and warn them that if there is an issue down the line, you'll be back for the cash and adding an admin fee. Works for me, accept one really cheeky sod had me back a while later for another problem and asked for the same chance for a post dated cheque, I asked when it was going to be paid in and then agreed to turn up the day after and be paid in cash, then it was her turn to be flumoxed, as she had to wait a couple of weeks before I appeared 🙂
