Hi Guys.

Last night i was at my local college. I have just started a 10 week basic plastering course in the evening. not thinking of changing career hell no. just fancied doing it because for £80 it will come in handy for the bad walls i find when doing bathrooms etc.

anyways the class was a group of 12. the usual suspects me and another bloke were trade related the others consisted of office workers, unemployed and a couple that had just bought a house and wanted to do everything up themselves.

anyway, we had a brew break and the subject arose of no work and trades are the things to get into. being the quiet person i am i sat and listened to the group trying to weigh up each of them (im getting good at reading people now)
the subject moved straight to one guy saying "oh i am about to enrol on a plumbing and gas course, its gonna cost me 15k but after a couple of months ill have my gas qualifications and plumbing qualifications, (i dont have a problem with fast trackers by the way).

i shook my head but didnt say anything. the conversation moved onto everyone saying plumbers earn a mint pimlico was mentioned and that its really easy to make money in plumbing. not one of them mentioned electricians, tilers, joiners, builders, brickies etc. they were all saying oh i bet the plumber down the road from us is making at least 95K cos he just bought a new van. or "we had a quote for a new boiler and the guy wanted us to pay £1700 thats why hes probably a millionaire, so we got our mate to fit it for £800" i listened to them all jabber on about plumbers striking it rich even during the recession. the other tradesman of the group had clocked me and we both knew what each other was thinking.

WHERE THE HELL DO THEY GET THIS GARBAGE INFO FROM?????
its no wonder everyone wants to be a plumber.

im going to wait a few weeks before i actually let on that i am a said plumber and see their faces. ill set them all straight if they ask.

they even "Heard" that theres a massive shortage of plumbers down south i think the figure was something like 250,000 if this is true then damn im getting in my van and driving down there lol.

surely this info is getting to them via advertising and training companies so is there no way to stop this false advertising.

it makes my wee boil. (if i had a pound for every customer who said i must be a millionaire id be at least half way there by now) 🙂

I get this alot round by me, when I'm doing private work. I always get people say "I bet your really well off" etc etc. I don't let it bother me though. I don't know where they get their information from but it must be coming from somewhere. Don't get me wrong we earn a decent living but nowhere near what some people think. It just makes me laugh when they say it. It'll be good to see their faces when you tell them your a plumber!

It does my nut in hearing that sort of news as down in devon we are overwhelmed with plumbers, all this because of everyone seems to think we earn a mint . I hear it in just about every house i go into ' my son is changing his job to become a plumber,,,,,good money in plumbing ' . When i tell them that its a myth and i'm constantly chasing work or money that customers dont pay they suddenly shut off at that point like they dont want to hear it.
I blame alot of this on training/ assesment centers trading on this myth to line there pockets !!

the funniest comment was when one of the blokes said "even top earners like barristers and doctors are re-training as plumbers and making more money" BWAHAHAHAHA

Total rubbish. I was in a doctors house the other day and I can tell you now I wish I had a 7 bedroomed house and an X5 on the drive like he did. I don't know where these people get their information from.

my parents lived up the road from a doctor. he had the biggest house on the road and a very nice convertible (i was about 12 so cant remember what model, i was to busy eyeing up his daughter who at the time must have been 16. to a 12 year old lad thats much better to look at lol)
