Hi Guys.
Last night i was at my local college. I have just started a 10 week basic plastering course in the evening. not thinking of changing career hell no. just fancied doing it because for £80 it will come in handy for the bad walls i find when doing bathrooms etc.
anyways the class was a group of 12. the usual suspects me and another bloke were trade related the others consisted of office workers, unemployed and a couple that had just bought a house and wanted to do everything up themselves.
anyway, we had a brew break and the subject arose of no work and trades are the things to get into. being the quiet person i am i sat and listened to the group trying to weigh up each of them (im getting good at reading people now)
the subject moved straight to one guy saying "oh i am about to enrol on a plumbing and gas course, its gonna cost me 15k but after a couple of months ill have my gas qualifications and plumbing qualifications, (i dont have a problem with fast trackers by the way).
i shook my head but didnt say anything. the conversation moved onto everyone saying plumbers earn a mint pimlico was mentioned and that its really easy to make money in plumbing. not one of them mentioned electricians, tilers, joiners, builders, brickies etc. they were all saying oh i bet the plumber down the road from us is making at least 95K cos he just bought a new van. or "we had a quote for a new boiler and the guy wanted us to pay £1700 thats why hes probably a millionaire, so we got our mate to fit it for £800" i listened to them all jabber on about plumbers striking it rich even during the recession. the other tradesman of the group had clocked me and we both knew what each other was thinking.
WHERE THE HELL DO THEY GET THIS GARBAGE INFO FROM?????
its no wonder everyone wants to be a plumber.
im going to wait a few weeks before i actually let on that i am a said plumber and see their faces. ill set them all straight if they ask.
they even "Heard" that theres a massive shortage of plumbers down south i think the figure was something like 250,000 if this is true then damn im getting in my van and driving down there lol.
surely this info is getting to them via advertising and training companies so is there no way to stop this false advertising.
it makes my wee boil. (if i had a pound for every customer who said i must be a millionaire id be at least half way there by now) 🙂
