Good morning all,

I am writing here because I have just moved to a new flat which I am renting. It is a two bedroom flat, I rent one of the room and share the flat with one flatmate.

I have checked the gas hob and it does not have a safety valve. I have usually lived in homes where the hob has a little temperature sensor on each burner, which detects if the flame is on or not and blocks any release of gas if the knob is not on the 'off' position and there is no flame. This one does not have it.

I am concerned about this, particularly looking at the price for a safe hob, for £65 today is possible to find hobs with safety valve.

Here my questions:

- I bought a CO sensor, is it useful for this? I tried to put it over the hob and releasing gas with no flame, I waited 20/30 seconds and no CO ppm detection has been detected.
- Should I buy a Natural gas detector?
- Is it legal to have a gas hob without safety valve in the 2015? Is mandatory for the Landlord to provide me with hob with safety valve?

Thanks,

Stefano

If it's a new hob in a shared dwelling ie flats then safety devices are a must have. If it's an existing hob from prior to 2008 without safety devices then in terms of gas safety this is classed as not to current standards but I don't believe it is compulsory for landlords to upgrade.

Might be worth discussing with your landlord.

Also a co detector would only detect byproducts of combustion so not a gas leak. A natural gas detector would work but it might be cheaper to speak to your LL about putting in a new hob

Hi,

I have found this on Amazon:

http ://www. amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000NVRBYE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AKQ65XGWV008T

What is your opinion on this?

Is it too cheap or is it OK?

Thanks.

Stefano

It would probably do the job but if you are that concerned that you might leave the gas on then I'd be tempted to speak to your landlord and see if you can upgrade the hob. Maybe you could come to an arrangement and split the cost or something

Thanks. Do you know any better brand?

I live in London. I don't know how are the landlords outside London, but here they just want to collect the rent. It is taking more than 1 month to get a door lock changed in my room, imagine a gas hob.

The only thing that concerns me about the one in your link is the lack of British standard numbers. there are a number of good ones out there if it were me I would visit a local plumbers merchant

I can imagine.. I've seen some real really unbelievable places renting. Was doing lots of work for landlords last year (not gas related) everything else and the real mess they're renting damp, moisture, old fashioned flooring, second hand carpets. Moving old stuff out over other dwellings beds mattresses cupboards.. and the rent price just keep on going up nup..

I just don't do that anymore had enough after six months. As a plumber found I had to work plumbing maintenance firms where you have the matter of mind not mind over matter Shift+R improves the quality of this image. Shift+A improves the quality of all images on this page.

Hi,

I have found this www. amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00WMARODM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A1JYTB4U3Z1TAW

It seems to be CE & ROHS certified. I do not know what ROHS is..anyway do you think this is better than the Mercury one? Any feedback?

Thanks,

Hello again.

I struggle to recommend anything off of Amazon or the like as I just don't know the product well enough.

My best suggestion to you is go to a local plumbers merchant and ask for one. Alternatively and as a lesser likelihood contact gas safe who may have something they recommend. That way at least you know it's for the correct purpose.

The average plumbers merchant shifts boxes. They will know little about the contents of a hob box.
Gas Safe are NEVER going to recommend or even suggest a particular one.

As to the original question, if it is new, it does not comply - if it is pre used it does. Weird but true.

Some are better than others mate. And I did say the likelihood isn't high that GS will recommend but otherwise it's just finger in the wind on amazon.
