Geberit flush sticking

Hi all, I've looked at the other threads on Geberit flushes but am still not sure if this problem - well it's actually 2 problems - was/were covered. So here goes -

I have a Geberit concealed flush system and sometimes when I use the full flush it stick and water keeps running in the bowl after the flush. I have replaced the whole valve system (everything that connects to the water pipe but the problem persists. Any ideas?

In another bathroom - the same system - you have to hold the flush down for a total flush - if you push and release - the flush stops. Again I replaced the entire valve system but no dice. Any help - much appreciated.

You probably have to replace the cistern outlet washer.

It would have to be the most difficult part to replace on the cistern, requiring the patience of a Saint and the skills of a Neurosurgeon.

The washer expand over time and gets caught on the sleeve that it is located in.
It only has to expand a couple of millimetres for this to start causing problems.

Many thanks oz-plumber. I've just been checking up on this cistern outlet thingy and realised that everything I changed was related to the inlet. I will check this when I get home this evening! At least the washers are not expensive but I'm a bit anxious as I'm not saintly in any way!!!

Just to clarify - this should solve the problem with the stuck flush and not the other problem with the abbreviated flush right?

I think replacing the cistern washer in each cistern should solve both problems.

PS - you may have to dismantle the flush valve inside the cistern to access the washer.
If you're not Saintly - stop by a Church, Mosque or Synagogue and beg for some Divine Intervention on your way home.

Have you tried replacing the seal on the bottom of the flush valve? If you removed the flush valve from the cradle inside the cistern check the rubber seal on the bottom of this valve. You will probably find this is covered in limescale preventing it sealing after you flush.

Well it took me 2 days but I finally figured out how to get the flush valve out of the tank. On the outer tube (for want of a better word) there was a black rubber and on the inner tube a flat grey rubber. Washed them all & took forever to reinsert. Unfortunately for me - this did not solve the problem of the short flush.I think the probem is that it's too far in the wall from the cover???? What it did do was to create a new problem - a minute or two after the tank refilled and shut off - there is a whistling and water running in the bowl. Perhaps I didn't replace the seals well??? I ordered new seals (the grey ones) so when these arrive I'll try again. I don't know if this will work but I'll probably have to replace the entire unit as the lever for the short cycle broke as I was fiddling to get it out.

I haven't touched the other system with the sticking flush as yet........

These things are fiddly and take practise and know-how. Might be time to bite the bullet and get a plumber. Sounds like you already have every possible spare so labour only shouldn't be so bad.

Thanks WaterTight! I tried to attach a the flush valve which seems different to those at the link you sent. The green lever unfortunately broke. You can see the black rubber at the bottom of the outer casing that I washed and replaced and there is a grey flat round rubber on the inner casing which I also washed and replaced. I don't want to call a plumber just yet.

Stupid question - does the valve simply sit in the hole at the bottom of the tank or does it need to be screwed down? I only bought replaced rubbers for the inner casing should I also try with new rubbers for the outer casing? What is the purpose of that black bracket? Took me ages last evening to get it into place and I'm not sure I did it correctly. It is not attached to the valve just to the back wall of the tank. I thought that perhaps it was there to help hold the valve down??? But I don't know .......

That black rubber your referring to looks like the seal that seals the cradle to the actual cistern... I may be wrong but it sounds like you have unscrewed the entire valve from the cistern nut which is located under the cistern. If thats the case you are going to need to remove the cistern from the pan and reconnect.
My advice is get a plumber round and let them renew the entire valve. Will take them 20 minutes to do the job. By the time you pay for new parts etc. At least you know you have the job resolved 100%.

It's a concealed system - will they have to break the wall to remove the cistern? Seems I created more trouble than this is worth 🙁

Difficult to say without seeing what you have done. If the valve needs replacing then they will need to make a hole so that the nut under the cistern can be tightened/undone.

Remember, us plumbers don't do apprenticeships/train for nothing. I always tell customers not to touch what you can't fix. What could of been a simple washer change for a plumber, has probably made a bigger job now! Call a plumber in. :wink_smile:

I doubt that this is somehow a bigger job. This video [video]https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zo4WjilhVMs[/video] seeons to suggest that the black rubber is part of the valve. In any case when it was all reconnected it filled and shut off just fine. The only problem is that it started to leak on the bowl a few minutes later which seems to suggest either I didn't replace the seals properly or that I need new seals. I'll try again over the weekend. New seals should arrive on Monday.

The guy in the video cut's out a new seal from a piece of rubber... Is that rubber the right type of material to create the seal? I can't be sure as I do not talk the language he is speaking! I doubt it very much.

YEAHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Apologies for the caps!

Fixed! Now I don't really know what did the trick but there were two things - one I had stupidly replaced the black rubber one rung further up than it should have been and two, there were some water bubbles on the inner grey rubber that I simply burst! Voila ....... no more leaks! I honestly can't believe that it was that simple. Patience!!!!!

Now I've ordered a bunch of stuff that I don't need. Oh well, I'm sure there will be a next time.
