Well, what a day!

My van is a 53 plate Vauxhall Combo 1.7, started to make a horrible noise so I thought it was the clutch. In the back of my mind at worse I thought gearbox. It keeps jumping out of reverse!

Took it too my mechanic who maintained it, I bought it off in March '07. He took it for a drive came back and explained that my gearbox was knackered.

The saga then begins, a scrap yard gear box £300-350 plus a clutch at £300-£350 + labour + oils etc. The problem is once you replace the gear box you are foolish (apparently) to put the old clutch back, makes sense. However, if I buy a 2nd gear box from a scrappies then is goes after 3 months then its back to square 1. New gearbox is just too expensive which then leaves a re-conditioned one which is considerably more than the scrap yard one. By this point I am a little ticked off as you can imagine. The vehicle is well maintained and driven carefully, only has 52k on it.

Oh, the best part is my van is worth £1500!

Trying to keep my cool a litttle, being extremely annoyed at this and swearing a little about my circumstances that I found myself in.

The dilema is: throw money at this one or buy a new van, well, as my mate said its a no-brainer for £3400 I bought myself a new combo well a '06 plate anyway. All I can say is that I'm gutted.

The hurtful part is my insurance company want an extra £100 to insure the blasted thing which includes a document fee at £30, if, I cancel the policy and go elsewhere then I do not get a refund. The engine on the new combo is smaller!!!!

I've had enough and its only MONDAY....................

Clutch at 350 plus labour......... 😱

I'm afraid that sounds like a rip to me. the gearbox is coming out so it's easy to do the clutch while your at it. So surely the labour would be easily rolled into one, I'd speak to another mechanic.

Tuesday will be better

Sorry, writing in a mood, gearbox and clutch then 1 lot of labour. Probably take the best part of his day though. Still in a mood.

Will cheer up tomorrow as I crawl through a loft then change a set of bath taps.

Sometimes I think I'd be better off on benefits or working in B & Q!

Sorry to hear about your van mate. I've a similar thing with the car, went to change the brake pads last week and whilst she was jacked up I noticed that the rubber covers where the drive shaft meets the gearbox - both sides!!

I've just paid £770 for a part to solve an engine squeal (on our car).

Returned, complete with original squeal. Turns out now it needs a new air conditioning compressor unit wotsit. I bet those aren't a few bob. Asked for the original part and will collect it tomorrow to examine it.
