Well, what a day!
My van is a 53 plate Vauxhall Combo 1.7, started to make a horrible noise so I thought it was the clutch. In the back of my mind at worse I thought gearbox. It keeps jumping out of reverse!
Took it too my mechanic who maintained it, I bought it off in March '07. He took it for a drive came back and explained that my gearbox was knackered.
The saga then begins, a scrap yard gear box £300-350 plus a clutch at £300-£350 + labour + oils etc. The problem is once you replace the gear box you are foolish (apparently) to put the old clutch back, makes sense. However, if I buy a 2nd gear box from a scrappies then is goes after 3 months then its back to square 1. New gearbox is just too expensive which then leaves a re-conditioned one which is considerably more than the scrap yard one. By this point I am a little ticked off as you can imagine. The vehicle is well maintained and driven carefully, only has 52k on it.
Oh, the best part is my van is worth £1500!
Trying to keep my cool a litttle, being extremely annoyed at this and swearing a little about my circumstances that I found myself in.
The dilema is: throw money at this one or buy a new van, well, as my mate said its a no-brainer for £3400 I bought myself a new combo well a '06 plate anyway. All I can say is that I'm gutted.
The hurtful part is my insurance company want an extra £100 to insure the blasted thing which includes a document fee at £30, if, I cancel the policy and go elsewhere then I do not get a refund. The engine on the new combo is smaller!!!!
I've had enough and its only MONDAY....................
