Hi, I have a problem with an Ideal Icos boiler. The boiler is located on the ground floor of a dormer bungalow. The pump and diverter valve are mounted above the boiler in the false roof. The problem is that after draining the system to fit a new radiator and refilling the system the boiler only runs for a minute or so before cutting out on high temperature. All the radiators have been bled as well as all the high point vents and the pump. The air appears to be trapped in the boiler heat exchanger as you can hear gurgling and popping in the boiler as the temperature rises. The flow pipe obviously gets very hot and the boiler then cuts out. I assumed that the boiler would have some sort of auto vent on it as I cannot see any way of getting air out of other than through the high points vents which don't clear the problem.Your advice would be much appreciated.

High point vents aren't blocked are they ? does water come out when you open them

No, the vents are not blocked, I get a good flow of water out of them. It seems that somehow I need to vent the boiler but not sure how.

if i remember rightly. The feed to the boiler has to be inverted.drain full system again and refill.

Thanks but not sure what you mean by the feed to the boiler being inverted. I have drained the system again, refilled and bled all the radiators, pump and high point vents but still have the same problem.

Leave pump running with boiler turned off & keep trying to bleed any air from the pump & vents.maybe there's a bleed point somewhere you havent found yet?Any visible pipework that looks like air could get trapped in?

Thanks, I've left the pump running overnight, re-vented the system and although the boiler did cut out it seemed to run longer than before. I'll keep running the pump without the boiler on and venting and hopefully I'll eventually get there.

Left the pump running for 36hrs without the boiler lit. Air lock has now cleared and the system is up and running. Thanks for the help.

whoopie ! - hot showers all round

well done on getting it sorted
