Hey there I'm new to Scotland and i'm a registered plumber from Australia I need to know if my qualifications from there will be recognised over here or how I go about getting the training done, eg for gas safe.

Welcome to the forums nige.

Look up and talk to SNIPEF, they may have a comparison chart. But you'll definitely require gas safe.

Sweet will look snipef up, I know leaving the warmth is going to be a big change but like they say happy wife happy life....

Can be relaxing that's for sure, Melbourne has got some great pubs especially kicking back outside.

A lot of DIY are doing or trying to do it themselves these days in the way of general plumbing but when it comes to gas as such, registered plumbers can do the work they just need it signed off by a licenced plumber, eg their boss. Most guys finish their apprenticeship and only become registered and work for someone else, they can do all work of plumbing but can't give compliance certificates to verify the work that's where the boss comes into it. In saying that anyone who does plumbing work and not qualified to do so can be liable if something goes wrong....

cheers for that, do shops sell gas gear to diy or do you need licenced ticket as proof to purchase?

In the way of welding gear you can get that from most hardware shops over there but in the way of fittings and stuff I've never known of anybody having to prove they are gas qualified to get the material from plumbing supply shops. Do you have to do that over here to get material.
if the customer wants verification that you are a legit plumber you do have a photo I'd card stating that you are a registered plumber though.

just wondered as some had said it was tougher to buy gas gear etc in Oz, only store that wants id for gas/oil kit is screwfix just a pity all sales places dont follow their example

Map gas bottles is easy but if you want oxy/acetylene bottles you need an account or work with someone that has one. Some replacement bottle places will check that your vehicle is ventilated enough as well, if you have a van that is, been a few explosions in last couple of years with leaking bottles etc.

Yeah wheeto every Tom dick and Harry can get fittings, but as you probably know if your using gas pex or veiga if that what you call it over here you need the tools too. Doesn't stop some of the DIY guys giving it a crack though. On one of the plumbing shops web site it had the DIY stuff ups, bit of a laugh, have a look if you like just look up DIY Disasters | DIY Disasters 2012 | Plumbing | Reece.
