which pipe bender doesn't kink copper tube, bought one from tool station, kinks every time :angry_smile:

best one to get is one off ebay about 15-20 years old but in good nick. Modern day ones are made poorly to a lower spec.

normally ripples are caused by bad copper or a bad bender. modern benders due to poor build have to much slack/movement and space between the guide and rollers. One simple way of improving your bender clean former and guide with wore wool, buy a 6" steel rule from a tool shop and put it in between your guide and roller when bending. This will make it tight and bend better. Also a worn down guide can cause simular issues, new guide can be got from ebay for a few quid.

if your new bender ripples then return it for a replacement or your money back. If you look closely at most benders on the market theres ony a few different ones under many brands. The hilmor and record are the same, and some other lesser brands seem to be the same design.

take a look a bend it now, they used to make the hilmor bender when it was made slightly better than the one now before manufacture was shipped to the far east from the uk.

my record bender i use now is 20 years old, i got it off ebay for abot £15 from an guy who brought it to do a bathroom in his house and aftert a few bends it was put in the garage and left for 20 years. Its like new and bends like dale winton.

All portable benders will ripple 22mm pipe after a while.
If you want perfect bends all the time buy a stand up machine.

I'm due a new one, the bend it now ones look exactly the same as the hilmor..

I've got the stand bend it now machine, brilliant piece of kit and so much easier to bend 22mm than a hand bender. Unlike the Hilmors, they are made in the UK.

Is the standard of manufacture noticibly different?

Have had my hilmor over 20 years now, no ripples yet. Although I'm not a massive bender. *childish grin*

Yes, the British made ones are far better as were Hilmors when they were made in the UK. Bend it Now made the original Hilmors before Hilmor went on a cost cutting exercise and mass produced them in a factory in the Far East. One good example of buying British means buying the best.

A stand up bender will last you a lifetime and longer.
I have 4.
3 hilmors in various designs and sizes up to 42mm and a Record. All were given to me and all are around 40 - 50 years old. Still the original guides and wheels and all bend perfect bends.
I've lost the 1½" guide but that doesn't matter much as the 1½ pipe now used is all that thinwall rubbish to keep the cost down..

ive got a bend it now stand bender and its very good. Only use it for 28mm really and its never bent a bad en yet.

well thats a lie, but that was down to the plonker using the machine rather than the machine 🙁
