Evening all,
Some advice please. I went round to a customers home to do a few small jobs.
One I just can’t cure.
When the cold water is running the pipe around the house vibrate. It’s a newish build property and is mainly poly pipe running through joist and in walls. The flooring is large sheets of OSB/Chipboard with no access points. When the water has been off for a period of the time, they noise seems to disappear for a few days and then returns.
The cold water has pressure reducing valve fitted and also a pressure and temp valve on the hot water storage tank. It’s a combi boiler but the house has 4 bathrooms, hence the need of extra hot water storage.
The noise isn’t the standard water hammer as it occurs when the water is running and not when a tap or toilet inlet valve shuts off.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advamce

I had that problem with a customers property. Could not get to the source of the water hammer without taking half the house apart to access the pipes (loose pipes). So I fitted a water hammer/arrester to the mains under the sink just after or as close to the stop tap as I could and it solved the problem. 20 minutes work, job done.

Hope this helps.

I was looking at that earlier and wasn’t sure what they actually did. I understand the principle of them. They absorb the pressure when a valve/tap is closed off. The issue I have is the noise is there when a tap or valve is opened.
Thanks for the reply it’s much appreciated.

I would fit the hammer/arrester first and take it from there might save a lot of time.
Many thanks
That’s the route I am going down.
I have spoke to the customer and they agree. However they added that the noise only seemed to start when they fitted a washing machine. With this in mind, would you connect the arrestor near the washing machine or just after the stop tap under the sink?
Many thanks

What a shame you didn't mention the washing machine from the beginning.

Try to fit a shock absorber as close to the stop tap as possible. That way the whole house (water wise) is covered.

Consider using an endoscope / boroscope to find the run(s) that are not properly secured. Take when drilling the inspection holes not to damage any pipework/wiring!
