OK - now i know that I 'Should' know all this stuff but it's got me confused and I need to sort this out today. I have a Drayton LP241 programmer with a Drayton wireless room stat, a honeywell cylinder stat, and a Potterton Prima F system boiler that has a pump overrun.
The problem is that the wiring of the boiler doesn't match what is in either the boiler manual, or the programmer. I could sort it if it was a simple matter of following the usual Honewywell Y plan guide but this isn't adding up - in the photo you can see that there is a 4 core wire and this comes direct from the airing cupboard, there is no 3 core to the 'Pump' as the manual suggests and it is really confusing the hell out of me. It's probably something simple but I can't see it so if any of you can help I'd appreciate it

You need to strip the 3 core out and fit a new cable. There is no earth on the boiler and the earth has been used as the pump live. You need either a 5 core or 2 x 3 cores. The pump will be wired into the main junction box and that taped up earth is connected to the live going to the pump in there. It is just std wiring with a pump over run.

This is a must !!!! as tamz says the boiler needs a new cable run from the wiring center to include an earth before someone is killed !!!!
A 4 core & earth flat cable has been used & the earth (red PVC tape) used as a live conductor this is a very big no no.
The Neutral & Earth for the pump have been piped up from the wiring center upstairs only the Pump Live needs to be run back up to connect to the it upstairs.
Maybe get yourself on a Baxi or Honeywell wiring course (or others) it give you more understanding & confidants to tackle this type stuff.

Thanks guys - but the appliance is earthed, you just can't see it. I think that the sparky or whoever did this originally was just saving on the cable and using t&e. My problem is that I have to get this done today as it's for an 87 year old lady on he own and she can't be without the heating overnight.
i am just about to try using the Drayton Biflow diagram but it ain't 'alf complicated with all them links etc.
There's the standard Honeywell cylinder stat, a Drayton wireless room stat, a center brand mid position valve & a Drayton LP241 programmer. I just can't get it all to work together. Oh btw I have done the Honeywell course - great if you're working with all their stuff but not when it's mix and match. I can't change the programmer either as it's been purchased by the customers son.

It doesn't matter who makes the stuff it is all the same wiring.

That cable is a big issue. It needs changing or the old dear may not reach 87. Remember you are last man there so you are IT if anything goes wrong.
Btw where is it earthed to as there is nothing on the stud either? Cross bonding on the pipes is not good enough.

Btw It wasn't a spark who wired it originally it was a rough rsed plumber.
