We live in NZ and have a Rayburn 480 D Mark 2.Its quite hard to find anyone in NZ who knows about these ovens and I keep reading lots about troubles people have with these ovens, and can't believe there has been no bad publicity in regard to the problems...as they aren't a cheap option to install. Our main problem is the boiler hardler runs.It clicks off , but not completely and then reignites and then about 45 minutes later it tripd the red button at the bottom off.We cannot run the cooker and boiler together of late as it billows smoke, but we can run them separately with no problems with smoke. The cooker runs up to temp really quickly and pushes out the boiler reset button....the one on the control panel. It rayburn itself seems to be getting really hot.
Can anyone help.....I rang Rayburn but they said that The company we bought the oven off were the service providers.I would have to say they have never had a rayburn engineer anywhere close to NZ and while we can get the boilers serviced....no-one has a clue re the Rayburn.:dead::freak::thinking: Its getting a tad frustrating so hope someone has an idea for me...I have been trying for 8 years now and am finally really frustrated.

On these you normally run both burners together to adjust the co2 readings, it sounds as if when both burners are on there is not enough air for them both and they are starved of oxygen and so burn sooty ie rich mixture. There can be many causes of this and any engineer who works on pressure jet burners should be able to get you up and running, the overheating issue could be a thermostat, but dificult to say without checking temps etc.
The other locking out problem could be the photocell or solenoid or bocked filter.

Thanks for that.We have had diesel mechanics in to service the boiler and they do analyse the air but only singularly I think.Everyone also says the smoke suggests it being starved of o2, so leading to incomplete combustion, suggesting a blockage....they have all suggested the "flue" as the cause but we have had it checked and rechecked and when I clean the baffles etc their is such a good draft up the flue that the light soot is blown up the flue almost before i can vacuum it up.
NZ'ers are not familiar with the double boiler, so that could also be an issue.
We have replaced a solenoid but maybe should look at the other 3 and replace them to see if there is a difference. We have also replaced the photocell.
The cooker boiler has the slide on the air mix right towards the plus. This was done by sighting whether smoke was still coming out the chimmney.Should I adjust both boilers running together until there is no smoke comming out the chimmney? We do struggle to get anyone here to do anything with the Rayburn as mostly they deal with industrial type boilers and many are unsure as to the Rayburn and its working.

By the Blocked filter do you mean the one close to the fuel tank or is there one internally?

All the filters but I would run both burners up and adjust the air. You really need a flue gas analiser to get the right readings together with a smoke pump.

Ok Thanks for all that.
The diesel leak appears to be coming from one of the solenoids........can this be....I thought they just a magnetic thing and can't figure how it will have diesel coming through the casing???

The solenoid fits over a brass stem which had an o ring deal it sounds like it may be leaking and will need to be replaced

Probably best to replace the solenoid as it would save the hassle of trying to find the O ring then finding it's not that part after all. From memory I don't think a solenoid will break the bank!

Many Thanks. The electrician seems to think to rewire the solenoid is really fiddly and time consuming. We will let you know how we get on.The only thing left is the oven temp shooting up to roast really quickly, could this be a crack somewhere? What would some other reasons for the fast heating. The air mix slide on the oven is right up to the +....not sure what this means or if it has anything to do with it.

Check thermostat. Probably faulty.

Solenoid stem is usually a complete part. If youre going to the bother of taking it out might as well replace.

Hi all, and many thanks for your advice. We have solved most problems but still have the problem where we can use the boiler and the cooker separately but as soon as we turn them both on the billow the black smoke. If we adjust the rayburn so this don't happen we then get problems when we fire them separately. We have had pressure jet people into service, their thoughts are that the air is getting in alright at the fire up but once we get both firing there is incomplete combustion due to the air not being able to get through ????due to flue ways being blocked. So we have cleaned what we know, but has anyone got any ideas. We have had a hole in the right hand wall, due to pressure build up....can't be explained either, but had someone weld a plate to cover the hole....would this be a prob....or have we put the baffles back wrongly...or can you think of other problems that would cause this.It is a diesel fired Rayburn.Thanks.Look forward to your help.Kay

Has the oil pump been replaced?

Depending on the modell, the two burners are operated by the one pump. Black smoke (where there has been none before) is frequently down to the wrong oil pressure and a faulty oil pump.

Just had a look out of interest (as 480k has only the one). Only the one on the 480d two (I mean too!)

It's been a while since I last saw a 'd' from memory they ran at differing fuel pressures cooker / boiler as you say looks like that was a mk 1 though.
