Personally, I'd take the job, and just casually say, you were fairly upset that she asked you to match someone else's price, as your charges are dictated by the quality of your work, and you thought she understood that. It's a free country and she can use whomever she wants for the work, but you thought your professional working relationship was based upon the quality of your work, not the price.

It seems utter madness to me not installing the wetroom

i have a few customers with a few properties who i would get regular work and they would highly recommend me to others which gets me more work and more dollars
my point would be if you were doing the wet room already why not just give her the 20 quid discount and do it all happy customer
if im in a cust house say changing a gas hob ill offer to service the boiler at a discounted rate as ill be doing all the checks anyway
makes no business sense to me buddy

Look at it from the point of view of the other plumber.

He did a couple of cheap safety certificates to sweeten the customer, and he is about to land a nice juicy wetroom installation from it. Sounds like a result for him. Probably thinks he is a marketing genius. 🙂

Like you i would not drop the price to match some one else's, but also would not throw another job away that i was originally happy to do.
If you don't want to do the wet room just be honest and say you don't want to do it, giving a high price won't do your reputation any good.

I can see why VI is annoyed, i'd probably be feeling a bit wound up myself too. Her husband sounds as though he could do with a slap for starters 😀. I'd be a bit annoyed at the 'disloyalty' the customer has shown but it's to be expected with a lot of people when it comes to money.

But I would still do the wetroom and what ever price you want from it just add on whatever you can get away with and walk away a winner. Then decide in the future if you want to do anymore work for her.

Why would you not just give the £20 discount and add it to the price of the wet room?

Walking away from a few £k over £20 is madness.
