Hello,

I have a washing machine which keeps filling up with dirty water when not in use and I was advised to get a non return valave for the waste pipe. The one I have looks like this:

The fitting for my existing waste pipe which, goes directly into the kitchen sink waste, looks like this:

So, obviously I have two male fittings and I can't find anything that will join the two together. The only solution I can think of is to get another length of waste pipe and join them together this way. The only problem with this is the existing waste pipe, at 2 metres, is already about a metre too long with the washing machine being right next to the sink and, a new length is minimum of 1.5 metres.

Any suggestions please?

All you need to do is make the existing waste extend up to beneath the sink top, then drop down into the trap.
Bin the non return, this will cure it.:24:

I have tried to do this but the space under the sink is so limted i cant get the pipe to go and then down with enough space to join the trap. And if I pull the washing machine out, it comes out so far that there isnt enough slack on the pipe to do anything with it.

Is this a new problem and does the sink drain away quickly, are there any bad smells when the sink is draining away? If yes to any of these I would start with the trap U-bend, remove it and check it`s clear then as Chalked said you need to somehow get the pipe up higher to create an arc, this can be near the waste or behind the washing machine but nearer the waste is best. The non-return valve fitted inline could cause problems so I agree bin it.

Go to your local merchants and buy an extention hose and fittings tell the guy behind the counter what you are trying to do and he will advise you what you need .You need to lift the waste pipe higher than the trap to solve your problem........regards Turnpin😛unk:

I might be looking at the photo wrong but it looks to me like you need to turn the trap round! The w/m spigot should go on the side of the trap not on the out let.

If it keeps filling up its because your waste is incorrectly positioned.
Check your manufacturer instructions re correct height

Well spotted! It's completely back to front. The sink must smell as its am open drain

This is such an easy problem to fix without the need for ANY valves.

Save your money and ensure the drain hose at its highest point is touching the underside of the worktop. Simply clip it up.
