Hello all.

Im looking to replace the toilet. It's old and the soil pipe comes out the floor (see attached).

My questions are:

What do I do with the white thing on the floor. Does this stay or come out?
Modern toilets seem to sit closer to the wall so how can I get the cistern on the wall?

All help much appreciated.

Jon

The easiest way would be to replace the 'White thing' with a 90degree multikwik and build out the wall to meet the back of the cistern.

Thanks.

I havent yet removed the pan. How easy is it to get the white thing out?

Whats the best way to build out the wall?

Sorry for mundane questions, I'm a total novice.

Thanks

Jon

The White thing just pulls out.
You could build the wall out using a timber framework and plasterboard.

A pretty straightforward job and should be easily achieved by a novice.
Your biggest problem IMO is having the tools to hand.

A long time ago in a closet far away....
They used to cement them in, can be a pain in the rear to get it out without damaging the incoming pipe, slow and steady with a chisel and hammer (and PPE) is the way to go.
Once you have cleared it the fun begins! You will need to be creative with multikwiks or bring the toilet forward and box in behind it.
If you're a novice set aside a full day for this task and make sure it's a day when your local plumbers merchant is open 🙂
Good luck.

It looks like cement to me, but just noticed the wooden floor, you're probably right...

I lay my weeks wages you cant pull that white thing out of the floor thats a sand and cement joint into either cast iron or more likely a lead pipe with a brass thimble on the end to fit a new pan closer to the wall you will have to alter the soil
If this is ground floor then its more common to be a earthenware collar and the drains will need to be altered
putting a bent multi quick will on most pans throw it even further forwardas the collar will foul the back of pan base

You could save yourself a world of pain and just replace it with another low level cistern rather than going for a close couples. You could probably not change any pipework at all then or at most just have to put a bit of wood on the wall to meet the cystern. Getting involves in moving soil pipes could turn into a bit of a drama for complete novices imo

I agree with posts above, that looks like a mortar joint and i also believe that pan could be syphonic and you may get problems with that

my own house was like that it will be cast iron .it will be a dished bend and its filled with cement i cut mine flush with the floor with a grinder but the bend was realy sharp so only cut off what you need to . i was going to adapt back nearer soil pipe but there was other joints so close i decided not to . use a spacesaver pan connector to get pan back further

There's a few close coupled wc's that should fit the set up you've got that will let you have the back of the cistern against the wall without altering the soil or building any boxing in.
The "Jika Mio" is one, might be worth asking your local plumbers merchant if theyve got a catalogue that shows it's dimensions.

The white thing looks like a cemented joint. You will need to carefully chip it out.

As already mentioned, even with the toilet suggested, before you go and buy your new toilet, if the toilet you want is close coupled, you need to make sure the pan will sit close enough to the wall with a 90 degree bend as some modern pans won't fit up against the wall and you won't be able to take it back once you've tried and failed to fit it.

The safest way for an amateur is to fit another low level cistern.
