Evening all seasons greetings. Hope you've not worked (too hard).

A very good friend of mine needs a new boiler.

They are a young family, newborn just a fortnight ago and their heatline heap finally packed up today!!

its going to be at least £460 in parts to repair so they've just said to price a new one. I will obviously be fitting it at as cheap a rate as I can afford.

Im just trying to think of that magical cheap:reliable ratio for something to sort them out. They currently have a 35kw combi which I think is rather oversized for their property, 4 bed, one bath, with seperate shower. Bath is important to them with kids so don't want to knacker the flow to it too much. I was either thinking of one of Ray's Independent c30 packages as it comes with flue and controls or maybe even one of the Flexicom 30cx deals as they're currently cheap. I think that much more expensive is going to stretch them too far.

With the the flexicom I can offer extended warranties which could be good only 2 year out the box with ideal

as ever any thoughts appreciated as I'm really trying to get these guys sorted with something they can rely on as the heatline has been nothing but trouble.

Cheers

matt

My vote would go with Baxi or even Main, really good units. The back up however can be sketchy, proven boilers as well. Not like some of the ideals.

I've been impressed with the vogues, 32kw, yes it's a bit pricier compared to the other but 10 year warranty on parts ain't bad.

I was thinking vogue because of the warranty, is that out of the box? Or only available to installer connect??

whats the flow rate like on the various kW models do you know?

Anything over 24kw,s going to be over 10. That's enough ain't it?

doesnt matter which boiler it is regarding flow rates a 30kw is a 30 kw no matter whose names on the front

I have actually found that to not be true recently. I fitted a logic+ 30 for a customer and was a little underwhelmed with the performance, it was bang on whats stated in the MI's so nothing wrong with it as such. However the next day I went to a 30si compact which I installed a year ago for its first service. The Si outperformed it by about 6 degrees over the same flowrate. The logic had a 36 degree temp rise at approx 12 l/min whereas the Worcester had a 42 degree temp rise at approx 12 l/min/ I tested with a digital thermometer and a flow cup for both. Both gas rated spot on and inlet pressures etc were all good, so nothing dodgy going on.

I found it quite interesting and it may be worth a few people trying this out on boilers. I generally fit worcesters but have fitted a few Ideals as well. As I said, there isn't anything wrong with the Ideal as it is performing to the level it states. It just seems the Worcester was over performing for what it should. I am going to test a few more as I go and service them and see if this is a common trend or not.

New Ariston now giving 8 years on combi comes with flue / clock and you can reduce Kw on heating, also simple to convert to LPG if required, just change restrictor in boiler

If they are on a budget i would go for rays independent personally easy to repair and cheap parts when it's out of warranty.

Lets be honest, you pay your money and take a chance, most boilers on the market seem to have one fault or another, most people on here will favour one boiler over another, and slag off other brands, most now seem to use common parts, so Its down to personal choice, I've fitted a few Ariston's over the last couple of years without any problems, along with other boiler makes, How do i decide what to use ! in this part of the country ! Price & Warranty are the deciding factor , to most people its just a white box on the wall and as long as it provides heat that's all that concerns them.
