I have just got a new job as a service engineer / installer..i have served my time as an installer of heating systems but with hardely any wiring experience..sparks would always come and finish our electrical work..

I only have about 7 months experince as a service engineer, i have fixed alot of faults on boilers due to common sense and experience but im not competent using the multimeter for checking problems.

with this new job i asked will i have to do the electrics upon installing the heating systems and was told yes so i am trying me best now to research as much as i can on doing wiring and using the multi meter properly,

has anyone any advice?

Yes its one of those weak info areas, unless you splash out on expensive books. But try the Fluke or Caine site and download a mutlimeter manual if you can. Both Fluke and Caine do special HVAC multimeters.

If you are employed its down to your employer to ensure that your competent to do the work you do. That is unless you said you could do it and are already competent to do it before you got the job

If you have a smartphone/iphone, honeywell have a wiring guide app. Might be worth a download. Ive downloaded it and I have absolutely no experience with any wires, but its useful.

A few years ago I was in the same situation, you actually never stop learning, but I booked on a Mr. Combi course at Milton Keynes. I learned a lot there, but there is no substitute for experience. Hope that helps.

Also, forgot, Honeywell provide a small hand book on request with all the checks you need to make to find out where the fault may be.
