K

Kev the gas

Called out to an Icos 35 he this morning, I even checked the availability of a fan on the way as tenant told me it was showing F8.

The boiler case could not be removed without removing boxing above the boiler, the pic shows what was found.

Not a single screw/support for the entire vertical flue, how it has lasted and held together for 4 years is ??

3/4 hours booked tomorrow to seal all joints, secure flue and make safe.

The installation has had 3 gas safety inspections by 3 different engineers, amazing.

I have had this convo before on here i dont see any harm in screwing the joints imo stops this happening.

To be honest tho there are many engineers that i know that wouldn't bother removing the boxing to examine the flue .

well it only needs one gsr who can be bothered to remove boxing to do the job properly to show up the other ones who didn't do a proper job.

See we blame to installer and quite right, they take there fair share of the blame

but

I am getting tired of manufacturers being allowed to produce cheap and poor quality flues and connection joints, take this flue joint, look how shallow it is coming off the elbow and bet flue slips in and out so easily

It's through there poor manufacture that we are now going to be stuck with ugly inspection hatches all over

Think the BS or EC standard should be revised asap and lets get back to a decent, safe quality flue products

imho

really glad this was posted the straight legths of ideal 60/100 flue have a decant depth of socket and a reasonably deep lip i usually put 3 self tappers in the straight lengths but the 45 and 90 have a shallower socket and hardly any lip so i tend not to put self tappers in them i think in future i will put 3 self tappers in them as well agree with puddle flues are poor quality i use unistrut and clip it as well and there still not as sturdy as i,d like

totally agree with puddle, think back to last year in the gsr mag a guy died because the flue came apart on a ferroli now this is in part because he did not make good BUT IF THE FLUE BEND HAD BEEN SELF TAPPED,he would probably not died sadly in this industry lots more will die before the standards are changed

Agree, but worry about defying MI on flues as it is such a hot topic. If it doesn't stipulate self taping screws, do you use them anyway?

if there was a clip on that pipework before the elbow supporting the weight there would be no need to put screws in it, you dont put screws in 4" soil pipe do you ? Soil pipe is under much more stress than a boiler flue but if installed correctly and clipped correctly there should be no issues.

I think the majority of these flues have been bodged together , Common sense has left the building , I had a neighbour contact me for what he said was a simple job and comes out with all this fanny about helping each other , He had a BG contract and they had put his boiler AR because there was a water stain under a flue joint, Instead of putting a new hole in the roof directly above the boiler His installer ran some huge lengths of metal flue unsupported. The customers view was it just needed a clip I advised him to get the installer back and left
