I am working on is 20 years old, open-ventered, Y plan, microbore system. I would like to fit a magnaclean filter. The ideal position – on the return to the boiler – is not available as the only part of the return that is not under the upstairs floorboards is a too short section above the boiler which is also not straight. According to the instructions I downloaded the less than ideal but acceptable positions are before and after the pump. As shown in the photos, there is no space after the pump. The vertical section between the air separator and the pump is 29 inches/74cm with downward flow. My question is would installing a filter here increase the risk or air bubbles and cavitation in the pump, assuming I install and bleed the filter correctly before starting the system?

The photos (of the space under the hot water cylinder platform) were taken before I removed the pump and diverter valve.
Thanks for any advice. questionphoto1.jpgquestionphoto2.jpg

It's best fitted on the return to protect the boiler
If it's an existing boiler it will already have had any system much running though it
Fitting now will help remove this so it's not so important where it's fitted
