i got called out to a customers house today, a firebird enviromax not firing up, took the burner out and tried to fire it up as it was an external boiler, oil was spraying out and the electrodes were sparking, but no flame... any ideas what it could be? , i did clean it out and pour boiling water through the flue and it was flowing out the condensate trap, any ideas guys??

yes simon riello burner, the photo cell was sooted up totally black, i cleaned it and put it back in but didnt seem to work , it was pouring it down so i didnt like to test any electrics, ill go back tommorow if wether is better as its only half a mile up the road

Check fuel (type - had one customer order gas oil by mistake)
Check tank for water
Check fuel pressure
Check fuel filters - tank, line and pump filters
Check nozzle (if old nozzle is present try putting it back on)
Check electrodes for carbon deposits, and check integrity. Clean thoroughly
Check fan is spinning round OK and not full of fluff
Check airways for blockages
Check nozzle / electrode / blast tube distance settings

Reduce air intake and test outside the boiler
Try a spare pump (have had something like this happen before and it was the pump that caused the problem)

has it been serviced recently ?? If oil is spraying out, then no fuel shortage, although as stated above check pressure etc. You say the electrodes are sparking !! Fuel + spark = flames. If this is not the case then either fuel is incorrect or contaminated, or the ignition source ie electrodes are not arcking across to ignite the oil. Are the electrodes set correctly, usually 3mm apart and just in front of nozzle end.
