re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Never heard of the old plumbers bread trick? If you can push a small peace of bread ( depending on size of pipe ) into the pipe you want to solder, the bread will hold back the water enough for you to solder. I've have tired this on 15mm & 22mm works fine, not tried 28mm though.when finished turn water back on.The bread is so soft it will just break down when water is back on.

Chrome pipe has a very smooth finish, push will just slid off it.

Tip,you can buy a scoring tool to mark the pipe to let the push fit grab ring hold tight,or you can just file off the chrome enough for the fitting to go on.

Use a cordless dremel tool for this task then you can solder the chrome pipe with chrome removed to copper.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Thin slices of 20mm and 25mm blue MDPE pipe are ideal for centralising basin and bath taps in their holes respectively. (some you may need to cut the ring to open up).

Might be worth checking these BEFORE you turn the mains off too, just in case a customer says it's your fault and they were working fine before you turned up!

If you think there is an underground leak between the outside underground stopcock and the house, turn off the main stopcock inside the house and screw down the outside one until just to say open. With the crutch key on top of the stopcock, put your ear to the t handle of the crutch key and turn off and on. If there is a leak you can often hear rushing water from the valve head.

To remove black sludge thats come out of a radiator onto carpet, do not try to wipe it up or rub it, it will just push it into the pile of the carpet. Use an atomiser spray the area with water and soak up with a wet vacuum cleaner. Lifts it out of the carpet. Worked on small amounts. The miracles of a battery wet and dry hoover, can get you out of all sorts of trouble. 😀

Fix your grinder key or electric saw key or any other spanner that a tool requires with a cable tie down near the plug. It not only stops it from getting lost, but is a reminder to unplug the tool first before changing the blade.

Where would I get hold of one and for how much?

If you have dewalt power tools, get a dewalt one batterary powered or 240V. I use for everything from sucking water out of toilets (make sure no richard the thirds are in there though lol), into remove water in a pipe that wont drain away, Cobbled up an attachment to a hose pipe to fit on pipe, to suck the water out so I can solder

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

How to perfectly match the hot water to family needs

Capacity hot water tank should be carefully chosen. Why? Because the tray is not too small to provide a comfortable amount of water for washing and bathing. Too big - will increase the cost of operating the plant. Before you choose a tray, so take into account how many people lived in the house and how many points at the same time will be charged with water. For example, in a is the easiest way to determine the size of the tank based on simultaneous use of water by major points, namely bath and shower. To fill a small bathtub you need less than 100 liters, large - up to 250 liters a ten And when showering, we can use only 70 or even 250 l. It depends on the type of batteries installed.
If you are using a standard spray flow is 7-8 l / min, but for a hydro-massage shower panel ranges from 15 to 25 l / min. Then we add up these two values (eg 100 L + 10 min x 7 l / min) and on this basis, we choose a model of a tray, which is within 10 minutes will give us at least a flow of water. In the catalogs manufacturers specify this parameter as the technical performance of the initial, or temporary.
Choosing the tray in addition to its capacity and efficiency should also pay attention to how to heat water. The choice we have several solutions, but the tanks are the most popular coil, and layered.

joke a side ,this customer was in a wheel chair and had a bedroom converted to a bathroom but the guy who did the job said the pipes or pump may need replacing and fair play to him he did an excellent job, I was called to solve the problem and suggested trying sticking the hoover on the shower outlet to clear the air lock , 2 minutes later hot water customers delighted and I suggested buying one herself cheaper than calling me out LOL

Get cone shaped rubber bungs. Very handy if the house is off of storage and you don't want to be messing about with old gatevalves.

Just stick them in the storage tank at the draw offs, also saves you draining and refilling the tank if a valve jams shut.

R they really good ?

Yeah they have saved me alot of hassle in the past.

Had to go to a job about 2 months ago, the guy had fitted his own bathroom suite and had shut off the 2 gatevales in the loft. He managed to snap them both shut and the tank didn't have a standing waste/drain. I was in and out in 20mins because of those bungs.

They only cost about £2-£3 when i got them about 3 years ago from B&Q.

To clean a trap like new, put it on a quick cycle in the dish washer!

I print sheets of permanent adhesive mini laser labels with a large red H for Hot and a large Blue W for cold. Looks impressive and great on long pipe runs or where passing through a wall as it stops pipes getting crossed. Also good in elderly customer's homes as they can tell which valve to turn off for a burst.

Nice idea, but I just use a roll of red/blue insulating tape. Same idea, but cheaper. Plus I have a roll of yellow for gas pipes. Some people think that all gas pipe should be painted yellow, but they're wrong and often it's useful to identify it all, even if it's just for self help!

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

i use a permanent marker called SHARPIES i think, they are great and will write on anything which is handy for marking pipes, wires etc

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

I used insulating tape for a long time, but found that it can come off when going through a tight hole in a wall while the labels stay fixed. Don't do gas only bathrooms so you'd be more creative than me Dan for a gas label.

We called this the old carrot and tatie trick - A carrot in the hole and shove a potato onto the bottom of the swan neck of the vent.

Another tip - use the stub of an old candle to rub plenty of wax onto the formers of your pipe bender - easier to use and to remove the pipe.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

re: benders rippling pipe, are the rollers screwed in to the frame properly or a bit loose? this has given me ripples in the past as it rolls uneven when loose as its off centre by a even a fraction.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

I've been told that old pipe causes ripples too but the roller is the first to check.

If your pipe freezing machine stops freezing, take it to a local refrigeration eningeer rather than back to the manufacturers as its a fraction of the cost to get it regassed and serviced.

Break off a length of old hacksaw blade, about an inch or so long. Use a round file to form a half round or segment in the blade. It fits really nicely behind those awkward painted pipes and will clear away most of the paint...... don't go at it too hard 'cause you don't want to damage the pipe.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Get a good deal with a carpet cleaning company as I've done and when doing bathroom refurbs or any other messy jobs, offer this as one of your services on your advertising. I list this as hall and carpets professionally cleaned on completion. It's got me a few jobs where many others have quoted. Of course I always put dust sheets down too and clean up after myself, but many like the idea of their carpet getting a good old shampoo after their bathroom refurb! The carpet guys win too as they get work in these quiet times.

I have my own carpet shampooer - why give someone else the job?
While you're busy shampooing the carpet on that job, I'm starting my next one. Why would I want to do it, if it's been paid for in the price? Don't think carpet shampooing machines are a bog standard piece of anyones plumbing kit and I doubt if very few have it either.

You completely missed the point that I was making. It is a good impressive selling point to tell your customer that a professional cleaning company will shampoo and clean their carpets like new once the job is finished.

I get top hall (if job/bathroom refurb is upstairs) hall, stairs and landing professionally cleaned for £40. Doesn't cost me, because I have included this in the price. A good selling point and the carpet guys get business too.
Plenty of carpet guys in your neck of the woods in Glasgow.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

If your soldering a piece of pipe and theres a little bit of water in it that you cant seem to drain out, stick a piece of bread down the end of the pipe. It soaks up the water allowing you to solder the joint AND dissolves inside the pipe when your done.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

I might get some of that Just For Copper glue stuff. It is actually WRAS approved. Might be useful for places difficult to solder, or where there's water in pipe or where you want the pipework to look ultra-neat.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

if your first fixing for a number of different size radiators and do not know the pipe centres use the 76mm rule. i mostly use myson stats and pro rad valves but works on others.. eg. if the length of the rad is 1200 first fix it at 1276 centres, if the length is 800 centres will be 876. saves a bit of time i find.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

I add 80mm. Doh!!!

Not saying this is the best method of hanging radiators but it's quick and works for me:

1. Small pencil mark for centre of radiator about 15" up from floor.
2. Measure for right bracket distance (check back of radiator!) from this first pencil mark.
3. Small pencil mark 10½" up from floor to bottom of bracket (obviously check skirting boards and other obstructions to ensure this will look okay!)
4. Small spirit level set vertically against bracket and hold bracket tight to wall.
5. Mark two drill holes.
6. Start with 6mm drill hole and if bit slips around use small bit for other holes. Then use larger bit(s) as necessary.
7. Screw in bracket.
8. Measure distance between fixing centres on back of radiator.
9. With this distance for left bracket make a small pencil mark.
10. Hold bracket against wall with small spirit level.
11. Balance long spirit level over both brackets.
12. When happy with vertical and horizontal levels, mark screw holes.
13. Screw in bracket and about 19 times out of 20 radiator will be bang on level and centred correctly.

Usually takes me an hour or so for first radiator then 1/2 hour per radiator after that.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

when i worked on commercial we used to have small cuttings of steel which we screwed in dry to the valves which we just lined it up and marked the floor and it was as easy as that 😛 things are so much easier though on sites. This was on mild steel systems incase anyone is wondering.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

You'd be there all day DKIA🙂

Here is how to do it quick.

Stand rad in position against wall
Mark centre of brackets from behind the rad and sit it to the side
Mark 3" above skirting (with a stelrad you don't need a tape, use a bracket and run it along top of skirting with your pencil on the bottom of the bottom slot)
Hold bracket to height marks and square edge with centres marks
Mark 1 bracket in holes and the other in the slots.
Drill 6 or 7mm hole (whatever you use) to marks
Screw bracket to holes first with 2 or 2½" x 10's then the one to slots.
Level brackets and fully tighten slots bracket.
Fire another screw through the top hole of the slot bracket with a 6mm drill bit if it makes you feel better but it won't need it if you tighten them enough.
100% 1st time level 3- 4 mins a rad😉

When soldering vertical pipework want to stop the pipe from slipping out the fitting; ever so slightly pinch the end of the pipe and it will fit snug and you can solder trouble free.

If the termination to your PR pipe is difficult to access, say up high and you have a window nearby but too far to reach out . Make up the pipe with elbows returning on itself so discharge will direct to wall as intended then put some flux on the edge of the pipe near the elbows and sweat a 3 metre tube to it with a little contact of solder. Now you can fish it through the hole and snap off the 3 mtr tube. Just remember not to go overboard when sweating.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Different method for an out of reach blow off. Cut a bit 15mm at a 45º angle, hang a 22mm stop end from it and solder it on. Drill a 25mm hole and push it through.

Screw fix also sell a blow off termination that works in almost the exact same way as described above, however it will fit through a small hole as it is purpose made for the job.

I'll try and find the link.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Don't mean to pick holes but I think this would be unsuitable as it would not give a full bore of the pipe at the termination

Opinions?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'd say that it should still be ok, given that the pipe should be cut at 45 degrees, giving it the same / slightly greater csa to discharge from.
The 22mm stopend soldered on (even with the 15mm pipe inside it) will allow for for a greater area to discharge from than the 15mm pipe at full bore.

15mm copper tube csa = 176.74mm2
22mm copper tube csa = 380.12mm2
Area for discharge from stop end = 203.44mm2 (slightly larger area than full bore 15mm)

Hopefully an inspector would see it the same way and not make me faff about up a ladder to change it
Just my take on it, I may be wrong (infact, I usually am if I ask the other half!)

What you could try though I haven't. Use your drill and 1 1/2" core bit with pilot. pack in a load of coarse wire wool stick the end of your pipe in and whizz away

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

If you cut a pipe that you want to solder and it has water still trapped in it and you cant get it out i.e by opening tap and draining, nice little tip that works get a plant spray or the spray out of a window cleaner bottle and dip the end into the cut end and squirt in to a bowl/bucket and this will clear the pipe enough to solder the joint! Try it, it really works.

If you keep speedfit stopends in your pocket in case of an emergency, every now and then try them on a bit of pipe. If you leave them in your pocket for more than a few weeks the bits of fluff and dirt will stop then connecting to the pipe properly. They can be cleaned of course, but defeats the object of an emergecny measure. I had two in pocket for about a month and couldn't be bothered to get some from my speedfit box so decided to use my emergency ones. Neither would go on the pipe.

There is a chemical that you coat on to the pipe, leave it and the chrome comes off much easier. Sorry but don't know its name or where to get it, an American friend told me about it.

For the newbies....NEVER EVER use chrome pipe with plastic pushfit fittings!

It might be this: Muriatic Acid/Hydrocloric Acid solution

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

When fitting a slotted service valve (the one you switch off with a screwdriver) under a sink or hard to get at places where the valve isn't on show, a penny washer superglued into the slot makes a good handle for switching it on and off without messing about with a screwdriver. Cheaper than buying the ones with plastic handles.

while am I on a role

Also advise same relations not to paint radiators with emulsion paint, will not give the look they are looking for !!

If it's stuck with silicone, ease it off the wall a little and jam it each end with a big screwdriver. Pour some silicone remover fluid down the back of the sink, leave it for 10-15mins and it will come off nae bother. Silicone remover is available from your local poofix. It's great for removing silicone round baths and showers and for tidying up silicone when you've used a bit too much!
Oh, make sure you catch the silicone with a towel under the basin or it might mark the tiles!

Had one that was stuck solid with that adhesive "Sticks like..." Only way I know is to prise the basin off a bit and jam it each end with a big screwdriver then put a concrete saw up the back and start cutting the adhesive. I always cover the tiles first with taping on an old towel, to stop the saw marking them.

But use masking tape. I did it once with black tape and it left a black mark which did come off but took some persuasion.

Hint.
f you fancy a "career" in plumbing it is wise to get a job and be taught rather than pay a fortune to learn very little.

I was thinking just that, there's too many people too quick to part with their cash before doing any research into the current state of the industry. As 'Forrest Gump' once said 'stupid is as stupid does'.

I use gas ptfe tape on the threads of back plates for outside taps. It gets a really nice tight turn with little effort into the position I need the tap to sit. Never leaks and never any danger of it turning through time.

When fitting an item your unfamiliar with - always read the instructions, as prevents embarrassing situations at a later date!

Best tip I'll give is buy a Rage saw - the easiest way to take a galvanised tank apart for disposal and no sparks.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Never visit a wholesaler and spend 20 minutes ordering 80 quids worth of fittings, which are assembled on the bench in front of you, then realise you've left your wallet back on the job!

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Changing bottom inlet ball valves: Get the metal nut started on the plastic thread BEFORE you fully tighten the plastic securing nut. This gives you a bit more play and hopefully less headaches! Tighten metal nut fully once the plastic nut is tight.

Cust care: Even if house is a tip, but there's shoes at the door, take yours off too!

Tip: 90% of customers don't mind paying a bit more so long as your work area is spotless and you don't get re-called. There's no point being the cheapest all the time and cutting corners just to get by!

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

thanks what a good idea
one i remembered from pluasne

make an air test kit by stripping the rubber off an old tyre schraeder valve and solder it into some 10mm (i think) then solder into a 10x15 reducer connect the 15mm to a compression fitting, get yourself a foot pump and away you go.
