New employee (whats your thoughts!)

Hi everyone,

I have recently taken on an apprentice and I am really happy with his progress. Such a nice lad very enthusiastic and also very clued up.

He has made my life so much easier in terms of freeing up more time to do other work thus earning money.

I am thinking of taking on a full time heating engineer also. He / she must be able to install, service and also fault find. As I am snowed under and currently working 8-8 which isnt pleasing the missus or children!

Just wandered what the going rate is for such an engineer? Im in the SW. Im not looking for a cheap worker, I want quality and want to be fair.

I will look into this more in depth but wanted to see what you guys came up with!!!

In bucks I think the going rate for GS engineers is £200 per day, not 100% sure if this is standard but this is what I have been told 2-3 times

You should be able to take on someone decent full time for about 400 per week in my opinion, 500 max. I also employed an apprentice a couple of months ago and it has really helped me, he's already very capeable of doing anything I ask of him. He's 2 years through a 4 year apprenticeship and previously had experience for another firm. When he's fully qualified I plan to hire another apprentice and I'll have the confidence in him to go out on his own with an apprentice and will help me from being so rushed off my feet.

I think £200 is a lot, you would only get that if you are a subby.

I think you would be very hard pushed to get a gsr installer/all rounder for 400-500 a week(unless this is after tax?), generally you are looking at 29-33k p/a I personally do not know anyone earning less than that

You're not near portsmouth are you :tongue3: I reckon you could get someone with the tickets (unvented, water regs, cscs, tech certs & ACS) and low on experience such as myself at around £100+ per day. My old man does some property developing & the highest rate paid for a gas safe plumbers was £200 per day & they were mustard (This is in wokingham) just my 2 cents

i recone its down to the circumstances of the person an how much they want or need a job av ad weeks/months were am lucky to get £70 a day or £700 a month so its all well and good sayin you want £100 or £150 a day but if the work aint there your not getting it ad rather get £70 than nowt the law say minimum wage but you carnt pay it if you not got it should you go in debt tho pay someone i dont think so ,so its just struggle on or pay a bit lower whether thats right or wrong

got to take the rough with the smooth, probably gained the respect of a few people willing to work for that.

If you are planning on taking him on the books look at the jib rates as a starting point then decide for yourself if you want to offer more depending on experience.

Contrary to popular belief, most employed plumbers are on around the 25 - 30k mark.

bacause ive paid the money out for tools ,van etc etc carnt just pack it in,agree what ye saying price a cooker the other night said £50 cos have to buy hose and baynet woman said someone would do it for £35 so i said why ring me if there that cheap tamz £30,000 a year is £2000 a month min you wont get anywere near that were i am

Tell that to my mrs, when we are absolutely skint after xmas and not receiving 1 call.

The jib rates for an advanced plumber (NVQ3) is £13.11/hr on a 39hr week which will give you a take home of around 20K a year without any overtime. Add in another 2K employers pension contributions and it is a fairly decent wage which many self employed guys struggle to get near.
Not so many firms are in the jib these days so it can be a bit hit or miss.

£70 is fine for an improver/little odd jobs but the point of the post was that he is looking to take on a full time gsr guy that can do both install and fault find nobody who is any good will go a work full time for £70 a day.

I am also in a bit of the same situation, only i want the new person to just do installs with my apprentice.
i would provide van and tools etc.
Sometimes i think i wish i didnt have van payments, insurance payments, and no stress for £300-400 a week.

25 grand a year for someone on or off the books is good enough imo , end of the day you have all the stress if the cock up and pricing jobs etc.Even if they are a sub then i wouldnt pay more than 100 a day because you can guarantee they will be whining and moaning no matter how much you pay

no offence taken greengator i agree with what your saying but in the real world its very hard to pay decent money at the moment ,i luv someone to help me but usually there on the fone to there girlfriend or smoking and just carnt afford it at the moment the moneys not there plus theres to many plumbers now and everyone goes that bit cheaper to get the job so you wont get 50k to 65k like these ads say i was charging £60 for cookers £20 for bits and £40 profit never got one job had to drop it to get any as people kept saying another bloke said he can do it for £40 all in how do you compete and what if thats the only job that day
