got in my Transporter yesterday morning started her up and pushed the clutch pedal and crack. Pedal drops to the floor and cant get into gear 🙁 when i push the pedal in i get no resistance untill its near the bottom and then it goes rock hard to push.

i do not have any work booked in next week so i guess im lucky in that i have time to get her fixed but if i had work i could cover the costs 🙁

anyone know anything about clutches? or know whats the average cost to get one replaced? i am hoping its external on the linkages or whatever but ive google search cost of a new clutch and its seems to be £1000 plus at vw garages.

also anybody evey drove there van without the clutch?? how easy is it? ive got to get her to the garage

im :censored: off and skint so looks like the credit cards going to take a hit again.

to drive it without the clutch put it into gear start the van as it lurches forward take up drive you will struggle to change gear though sounds to me like your slave cylinders gone if your clutch is hydrolic see if you can find the fluid bottle and top it up some vehicles take fluid from the brake resivour, what years the van a grand to sort it out no way would i pay that

its an 06 transporter T5 1.9 tdi. Im thinking(more like hope) its non hydrolic but im unsure. cant find me manuals. I will have to go and take a look later if this blumming rain stops.

Im thinking of driving it in first 1/4 of a mile down the road and then phoning the AA monday morning to get a tow down to local back street garage which does my normal service and mots. Will have to do it early tho, dont really want to do it in rush hour traffic 🙁

well looking at this its a cable operated clutch not hydrolic so first i would check the cables not snapped

My clutch went on my van in January and it cost me 320 quid to get it replaced, I know vw parts are more than citreon parts but I wouldnt have though it would cost a grand.

Find yourself a good mechanic and keep him

Don't try to drive it without checking with your mechanic first.

I have the bigger engine 6 speed version, I'm not mechanical but my brother is, appears VW fitted a fancy clutch in transportors, not your standard pressure plate apparantly the new type clutch makes them quiter to drive.

A replacement clutch for my van is close to €800.00 plus labour, brother was driving it and noticed a slight "slam" in first and reverse, he reckons drive it till it stops because it costs the same either way.

If it's a cable it shouldn't cost too much they used to go regular in the 1980's models just don't make it worse.

cheers for your advise pete, looks like getting some rope and a tow down the road off a mate. only need to get 400m to be able to call out the AA and get a tow down to garage.

i have a 58plate t5 transporte , just did 39k miles ! and clutch was slippery for mouths before I changed it .
i had it changed by local vw main dealer and new clutch job is only £300 but 9 out of 10 times they want you to change the fly wheel which brings the price to £999.00 inc VAt !
I was quoted by local garage £1.3k +vat for the same job !
So i am strongly recommending you to ring local vw main dealer and they will change it for you same day as clutch is a common problem on t5 and turbo but turbo will go later ! When ring vw main dealer you can negotiate the price and tell them you want it done by them and you have ben quoted what i listed above i had mine done 2 weeks ago !

cheers stan will get a few quotes tomorrow including main dealer which is not too far away. my van has done 70,000 plus so im guessing the clutch has done well.

i know from reading that they normally skim the flywheel when the clutch is changed, fingers crossed if i need a new clutch the flywheel is in good condition.

your flywheel will be a DMF(dual mass flywheel, from experience unless you are getting judder when taking up drive the DMF will generally be ok however if a conversion kit to single plates available i would strongly suggest you convert this mega expensive part

surly it is a simple clutch cable that has gone?.
get someone to depress clutch whilst you look at the linkage at the bell housing and see if the leaver moves in and out. if not its snapped.
quite simple to do, bit fiddly though.
mine snapped a few times on my vw, important thing is follow the old cable exactly as any deviation or kink will make the new one snap again....theres experience talking.lol.

i have driven several cars without clutches more than a few miles but you need momentum to get started. you dont need a clutch to stop the vehicle only the brakes so forward thinking while your driving.

got it booked in to local garage that only does clutch changes/repairs, if i do need a new clutch it will be £255 fitted. My brother is going to tow me down there with his rover 25, good job hes just had the head gasket changed 🙂

just make some how sure that your new clutch will come from VW main dealer as , it seems to cheap it could be coming from place like eurocar parts who sell cheap chines build products . Try and see if you could actually supply it your self and then run and get it from main dealer

It could be a fault at clutch pedal or clutch arm i would check these before you get billed for something not needed

Now I'm not going to have a go at anyones driving here but when I used to teach people to drive a clutch would last for about 80,000 miles,

We all have (in general) a bad habbit of resting our foot on the clutch, if this causes the clutch not to engage properly it will wear out much quicker. Doesn't have to cause slipping by resting your foot on it but just causes excess wear.

can see what your saying but that statement is not totally correct modern hydrolic clutch release bearings are made to fail early
