Ventilation For Open Flued Boiler?

Hi there,

I am about to sort out a service for my boiler. It is open flued, in a compartment, and the compartment is ventilated via ducts from the loft which go well above the insulation.

My question is - Although there is plenty of ventilation in the loft, it is from vents around the eaves of the roof. Are these high enough? I seem to remember something about ventilation in loft spaces needing to be at least 300mm above the joists for open flued appliances?

Just wanted to know so I can sort out some more vents if I need to before the service. The MI's let me know how much free area I need.

I hope you have a CO detector fitted outside that cupboard wild nomad. I've attended to many fume spillages associated with this design regardless of the ventilation set up!!!

However regards the ventilation, if memory serves me well the 300mm you talk about is for the ducting I believe. The only issue I've ever noticed for vents fitted into the soffats is that they do not conform to the minimum open aperture of 5mm. They tend to be fly screen vents!

Yes, you are absolutely right. The openings do look smaller than 5mm, possibly more like 3 or 4mm. Is that an At Risk?

Those holes would just be NCS I believe. Its fly screens, closeable and <90% thats AR

Hopefully someone has their unsafe situations book to had to check.

:iagree: as bigads28 says ... fly screen etc... some of those circular ones do have flyscreen gauze behind them but without getting up close you wouldn't know ... some guys, I have known, carry binoculars in their vans by-the-way 🙂

Diamond gas, I'm sure plenty of us have binoculars, and I bet some even use them for work ;-)
