Hi all...

Am due to have my Baxi back boiler serviced soon, and the (wired) programmer, cyl stat and room stat I have are getting old (10 years) so was wondering if its worth upgrading to wireless units? and what the pros and cons are?

What do peeps think?

Thanx

Peter G (pjgtech)

well change for change sake not much point however you can save money by replacing room thermostat, not for wireless if in right place, better wired but you could update to a unit that allows different temperatures through out the day
also you may like to upgrade programmer with more heating and hot water timed options

as or salus, the old units were a problem if more than 2 feet from receiver ,however new models.seems reliable ,a lot easier to use and looks good

imho

Hadn't realised they had upgraded. Have you had any probs at all?

fitted a few of these, worried due to price but l/l jobs,no problems, very easy to use also, down side on the wireless model is battery replacement requires unit opening up,so customer can not do really but done during boiler service

I've often wondered about advance in technology. Most is good, but to me these roaming room stats are not a step in the right direction. Too many "What ifs" for me:

a) What happens if you lose it?
b) What happens if you drop it and it breaks?
c) What happens when you forget to move it?
d) What happens when the batteries run out?

These are all inconveniences (possibly costly) and not deal breakers but I'm really not convinced that these machines add much to saving on global warming (if at all).

a) What happens if you lose it? You shout at the wife
b) What happens if you drop it and it breaks? You kick the dog.

I doubt if they save much but they are a good toy.

don't you just fix them into position and thats that ??

I'm fitting a Salus RT500RF digital stat, are these any good ? or should I upgrade to a better model ? I plan on moving it around 3meters away from boiler is it possible to do this ?

P.S just seen that model for £23 Exc VAT from that site, my merchant is selling it to me for £42 Exc VAT !:90:

I personally hate wireless roomstats.

When I used to work in social housing went to an old dears house about a dozen times as she kept the wireless stat above the fire and used the fire all the time and she wondered why the heating wouldn't come on. Absolute nightmare. Eventually the council put an "old Skool" room stat in and problem solved. I think this was more of an education issue as she was never told how to use them but I don't like them for many reasons. Plus when you pull the 3amp fuse out on a service most of them need re programming.

As for the battery issue - i got called out to a "no heating" job on a sunday night one weekend, it was freezin. Got there and found the room stat on the side with no display on. took the back off and there where no batteries to which the womans reply was

"I need the batteries for the T.V remote, I didn't think taking them out would affect the heating!"

LMAO! That should be "Destroy all Brain Dead Inhabitants"

I think its down to education as well. If I know its a elderly person then I try and fit the simplest of controls. If they are reasonably minded then I usually give them an option.
For the knuckleheads I give them a big box of wood, paper and a tinderbox...:mad2:

my take on rf roomstats in my vast experience of fitting them DONT they are:001_9898: just take a wire to it,simples harder to fit but worth it,and if its being fitted for a brain dead tenant just fit a light switch anything else is beyond them

do they do the job though ? i'll be fixing it to the wall and show the customer how to change batteries, the signal will only be passing through a closed door at most. Will it do its job properly ? they just had a rewire couple months back don't fancy raggling walls or the trunken either

no they will work at first then break when you have been back 1,2,3,4 times the cables a cheap option

They work fine. They have a range of around 25m depending on the walls. If it is quite far away from the receiver, always try it in position before you screw it back.
It is the folk in the house who can't understand them.
I fitted a Drayton +1rf (it is just a digital thermostat) on a job last week. I've been back 3 times because her man can't work it! :censored: me! it is only a plus and minus button!
If they phone again it is coming out.
