Roof Access

I don't like heights, and even more I don't like getting from a ladder onto a roof and clambering on it to put flues in. I do it, but hate it. So...

I want to buy an access system for this because I worry and i'd rather shell out some big dime than hurt myself.

So far, I see there are 2 possible ideas:

1)A scaffold tower, aluminium. Pretty light, fairly quick to put up, looking at about £1500-2000 for a system high enough to reach most 2 storey properties. Disadvantage is it's a bit annoying to put up, annoying to transport.

2)Easi-Dec. Easi-Dec ? Easi Dec
I don't know how much these are yet, but I think around £3k for the 'super-legs' version which i'd need. Quick to put up, easy to transport. Downside is they are apparently a little flimsy and very expensive.

Anyone know of anything else?

ps. Please, no comments about 1)hiring 2)getting a roofer 3)me being a ***** haha. I don't want to keep paying to hire, I don't like working with other people/trades and I only trust my own work, I am a ***** on anything taller than a bungalow!

There are some 5m scaffold towers on fleabay at the mo for £269.

Might be able to add to them etc.

Take it there`s more than just you on site putting a tower together then when you say quick.

When I say quick, I mean relatively. But yes there are 2 of us but I can't see it taking more than half hour to put an aluminum one together.

But they look a little flimsy and that Easi-Dec looks so much easier and quicker, but it's 5 times the price!

Why are you so against hiring, the kit arrives on site on the back of a lorry all checked and ok. you start using your own its just another massive lump to store. Personally I wont get on anything with an area of less than 3 feet x 6 feet, feel safer that way and any costs go straight on the customers bill, if they dont like it then I walk away, I never work off ladders, too much too go wrong.

You tied the ladder in to the building and fixed the roof ladder to it. You then attached yourself to the roof ladder using a climbing rope and a full harness. You could take both hands off the ladder and lean back.

that easi deck looks like an advanced form of 2 ladders and two elbows with a scaffold board on them, bleeding scary, sod manning up Bod old son, as you get older your brain gets wiser and your sphincter weaker 🙂

As for the tetra system, brilliant system Mike, however this coward has always had a full harness and safety rope attached via something solid, preferably a chimney 🙂

I do it currently just by getting on the roof and pushing tiles up for footholds. But I know it isn't safe and I don't like doing it. So I am currently 'manning up' but do not want to. And thoughts of starting a family soon and various other things have spurred me to consider my mortality a little more. 🙂

The tetra thing looks ok but it's not much different from what I already do but plus a safety rope. I'd be much happier with a platform of some kind!

That Easi-Dec looks ideal but ridiculously expensive for what is is. Can't believe someone hasn't come up with the same thing but cheaper??

they have, its called scaffold tower hire and bill the customer 🙂

I only have a ladder as I'm a poor plumber lol. But the guys I sometimes subby for have one of the smaller sized nifty lifts that fit through garden gates and I can borrow when needed which is real handy. Usually I plod along with the ladder .

£200+ to hire. Can buy one for triple that!

Not a fan of hiring. Plus, I can still bill the customer for scaffold hire, then use my own........

Having looked at your options the Tetra has to be the best for you, going to the chimney level, the easi-dec is only good for gutter height, the actual transfer from platform to roof ladder is your problem area. Heights don't bother me at all, but I do tie off where possible and take all precautions, if I had to use one of these systems it would be the Tetra.

I might be being dense, but cannot see for the life of me how much the Tetra kit is or how to buy it??

I would get one of the reps to give you an onsite demo, see how it works for you,then haggle over the price,
