Worked for a nice old dear today. She tells me she had her new combi and central heating system installed recently by a good friend of her ex husband. He did everything including move her gas meter which is in her bedroom from one wall to another.
Turned out at the end of the job he isn't even gas safe but not to worry as he can get someone to issue a certificate. Needless to say this crook has disappeared off the face of the earth.
Now I'm not gas safe but have some questions:
1. Could I get this crook banged up? Legally I mean?
2. Can you even move a gas meter with or without gas safe?
3. Would a gas safe engineer even work on this system to carry out a gas safety certificate knowing it's been messed with by a third party who's not gas safe, or just shut it off and condemn the lot?
4. If yes, where does she stand on getting it sorted?

I feel obliged to do something for this poor old sod, as she's been had over completely. If I can get said gas man shafted at the same time, then bonus for me!

You GSR guys don't seem to have much faith in the scheme that takes £500 a year off you or whatever it costs you.

If you're registered they will fine you or even revoke your reguistreation. If you're unregistered they'll write you a nice letter inviting you to join up. It's a legalised scam.

Informing customers about the importance of using registered engineers is paramount, but trying to get this guy locked up is a route I would avoid. A fitter I know did this and had his 4 van tyres slashed, nothing happened to the guy about the install and no proof with the police about his van.

Only Transco can move the supply to the meter, a GSR can move it within the length of the anaconda as far as I'm aware

I'd agree with this, its unfortunate but in this day and age you need to just let things go otherwise you end up worse off and the little ..... get away scot free

I've been asked twice since I went SE in 1991. And one of those times was in response to me telling a biddy that no one asks to see my card.

It's our fault though. We should habitually wear it on a lanyard and show folk - they would then get used to asking for it.

Well I just think it's wrong that he's done it and obviously does it time and time again.
If you can freely go around do all this gas work like him then what's the point paying to be gas safe?
You guys pay enough to get your tickets at the end of the day. The laws should be firmer imo.

Well myself and I would thing a few others on here remember the days B4 Corgi etc. gas was part of plumbers job, I worked on doing the gas conversions from town to natural , we in stalled all sorts of gas appliances , the thing what does stand out is that you couldn't buy gas fire fixing kits or cooker hose's you had to take headed note paper with purchase order to local gas board store

Any GSR with appropriate meter ACS can relocate a meter, but not inlet, with written consent from supplier
