Not been on here for a long time due being extremely busy and my rediscovery of motorcycling. Anyway, cut to the chase, was in my local merchants today which I must say is a very friendly and helpful independent one. Whilst I was being served, an arrogant b*****d walked in and promptly started helping himself to the fittings on display behind the counter. What particularly annoyed me was the fact that the same a******e then proceeded to ask the lad who was serving me where such and such a part was located without giving a toss that the lad was serving someone. Briefly thought about confronting said idiot but decided I value my very good relationship with the merchant more than remonstrating and possibly thumping this moron and consequently being banned and/or arrested. Like me this guy is a regular customer and I'm pretty sure that likewise spends a large amount of money every month but what puzzles me is why he feels the need to treat the staff like sh*t and the place like he owns it. Just wondering if anyone else out there has experienced the same kind of thing and does it get your back up like it does me?

I do the same as your lad to help my indy merchant when he's busy, but I then wait till he has finished serving those in front. He is worse at starting to serve me and then moves on to someone else when I go for a coffee, so goes both ways, can be annoying at times!

Me too, we only have a travis perkins and quite often we have to go behind the counter as one of the guys whos worked there for over 20 years ( b4 it became tps aswell) still gets most fittings wrong, he isnt called dim jim for nothing lol, but i treat them with respect , especially the manager , gotta keep the relationship sweet for gweed prices lol

TP here bunch of ignorant peeps. Look at you as though you are oozing slime on their floor......and that is on a good day. We have another merchant who can't be faulted, will let you into their bins and is genuinely chuffed when they sort you out.........

Its all about manner and context. For one guy, he's genuinely helping out. For the next guy, he's proving what a big swinging dick he is.

Take it from me, your merchant knows which is which.

my merchant knows I want him around next year, so he will push me aside to get the public through quickly, then we get back to coffee and gossip.

I always wait my turn, get the counter monkeys a brew and even take them a sarnie. But then thy will drive 10 miles to deliver a rad valve if we call them. Normally sweeten them with 20 boilers next day

I always wait as well. Let them do all the running around as they know where bits are. I used to enjoy the chat with them and if somebody did that in my van I would go mental even if they were trying to help.

I used to see a few lads doing it and I don't think they left any quicker than I used to.

One of my merchants I go behind the counter when I'm looking nozzles and oil lines. It's quicker for the both of us.
