fan repair kit

View the thread, titled "fan repair kit" which is posted in Air Sourced Heat Pumps Advice Forum on UK Plumbers Forums.

Just looked at the ad and it does'nt show which parts he is selling for £7.50.

I serviced a Potterton Suprima with a recon pcb fitted by the customer 6 months ago, also bought from Ebay.

The customer was so chuffed telling me I was missing a trick as I refuse to fit non original parts.

You should have seen his face when I lowered the control panel and showed him the fresh staining/burning marks on his new ebay pcb

I might be having a blond moment here but what bit is he calling the bearings??

Most of these fans will quiten down if squirted with Wd40, some for ever some for 5 days.

Normally when on there way out the motor overheats and turn a nasty shade of brown, seems strange he is selling a part and not showing exactly what you are buying.

probably 2 steel ball bearings your getting for your £7, i guess if the bearings are worn, it'll work where greasing wont. there's a picture of some thing in a bag next to the fan he's showing on the listing.

Dear stephensonheat,

Hi, thanks for the enquiry. As it says twice in the listing the kit contains two bearings and some instructions. Hope that helps
Cheers
John

Helpful chap ! Not.

WD40 tends to dry out I find. I use this high temp spray grease which seems to do the job lovely. Loads of suprimas on an estate I cover. Only been recalled to 1 and that was just some silly bint who wanted a new fan for the sake of it (and didn't have to pay for it) even when I went back it was quiet but she was saying it was keeping her up at night, turn it off then!

I did set a fan on fire the other day though when i fired it up with the combustion chamber case off just after spraying the fan and watched the fan go up in flames, luckily the customer didn't see that one!

i seen this on ebay, IDEAL CLASSIC FAN REPAIR KIT fits 95% plus others GLOWO | eBay

i've just replaced a fan in an ideal classic because it was squealing it's head off, i've got the old one here and i'am thinking i might be able to re-use it by fitting new bearings, there's a potential saving of £100 or so over a new fan :smart: anyone done this

Not for a customer but i came home from holiday one saturday night to a dead fan (highflow). I found an old fan lying in my garage off something totally different so stripped both down and rebuilt it.
It was still going years later.

what you do to rebuild fan tamz, did you swap bearings & windings from one to other and re-grease etc,
you'd be lucky if both fans where compatable though.

Have heard of this being done before, but I have never done it myself, due to working for large companies who don't buy bearings and you just order the whole fan. If it were my own boiler I would attempt it, but only if I knew it weren't going to take a week to arrive and the boiler hadn't already broken down. Having said that, I changed the sister-in-laws Worcester 240 fan because it seized up and I was glad I didn't just get bearings, the fan had sheered off the rivets holding it on to the back plate. God knows how it hadn't simply fallen over in the chamber, nothing was holding it in place really. Mind, it was easy to remove!
