Hello!

New to the forum not a big user of this type of site in general but find this one interesting and have gained some usefull info when fault finding on boilers.

Based nearCrewe, Cheshire, been in this trade (previous 20 odd years in the sign and vehicle livery trade but got fed up of the desk job it turned into) full time for about 3 years, having done a course (yes another one!) I did two years at college doing the 6129 NVQ theory course, I then did small jobs for friends and family for about a year before taking the plunge full time, I've been lucky since day one to work regulary with a friend who's been in the trade for 25+ years now. I've been Gas safe (NG and LPG) for about 18 months having bulit up a portfolio of evidence. Also done the Vented/Unvented Hot water & WRAS qualifications plus the Oftec Oil courses.

So i've spent a fortune getting qualified and am now starting to reap the rewards, I really enjoy the variety of work, not being on the same place all the time, and take pride in the work I do.

Looking forward to gaining experience and learning more, and am sure I will find help and advice on here, and hope to give some back where I can.

Cheers and sorry if I've waffled on!! 🙂

Started them two years ago, a bloke from stoke college, Robert Kerr is now head of plumbing. Good guy.

Cool, my tutor was a good guy, Peter Duckworth (no relation to Jack!) he only stayed there about 3 years though, apparantley got fed up with the internal politics, I kept in touch he's back on the tools again now!

Small world eh? Well you'll find a lot of good info on this forum. Apparently Crewe is nowhere near as good as stoke, we get reminded of this most days...

Yeah well time will tell, wanted to stay on next year but been told it'll be 4 grand, so gotta find something else. No funding as I'm over 25 and already have an nvq. Oh well upwards and onwards!

Jeez, 4k is alot of money, I dont know your circumstances but I got my course fees refunded because it was the first NVQ course I had done since leaving school. But mine was about £900.00 per year from memory. You might be better off trying to get in with an experienced plumber (even if you have to work for nothing to start with), I've learnt more working with someone expereinced than I ever did in college.

Doh! Just re-read your post sorry!

I already work with one now, but it's getting the qualifications. My level two cost me £725. That's fine, but I don't want to she'll out four grand on something that isn't an nvq. I need a 6189 level three.

Mine was free because I was working for a plumbing company, not my first NVQ and gov't happy to pay it all! (level 2 & 3); mind u we are in Wales and education tends to be cheaper here.

I live on the border so I'm going to try Wrexham college next September. Either that or I will have to spend a load of money. Pretty annoyed really.
