lame plumber

Hi I'm on a rant here. Too often someone comes to the forum asking for advice on how to be a plumber and they are shot down and abused by some. In my own little world I find this repulsive, especially if these guys are mature as some are and exservices as the one was who I felt was treated badly today. We are here to answer questions, obviously an idiot diyer asking about how to strip down his boiler gets a a look above at the header. However just because some feel the only way to become a plumber is to go to college for 4 years and do tech certs and nvqs to prove they are plumbers and ready to go, that is your opinion and your allowed it. However Ive had to work with the output of some of thses colleges and theres a lot to be desired and some of these kids should never have got past term 1 imho. There are also people out there who have a mass of experience in life and are changing roles so lets help them, I know who Id rather employ in the long term. These servicemen have had upto 20 years in a constant training environment so they are used to learning and gaining a tech cert will be a doddle for them. doing a fast track course isnt the best maybe but its there and works, if they start off small and work up then why are we not willing to encourage them all the way. if the guy tonight having a go is so worried, then prehaps he ought to reexamine why he is in teaching in the first place, because he sent out all the wrong vibes and despite his great knowledge and experience which is obvious he totally lost my respect of him today as a person.

end of rant hi Mr D

I have to say I agree . . .

Its not all the time but it is embarassing when out of 10 post made by the general public - 7-8 of them end up being offended!

I not sure we should shoot down anyone - even an idiot DIYer working on their boiler.

Tell em the truth - yes of course!

Tell em they are a numpty - no I dont think so . . ..

Who ? name an shame 🙂

Do we really want to be pulling each other down in front of the general public?

It was a lad in the army looking at getting into the plumbing game, think it was yesterday.

thread was 'help what do I need to be a plumber' couldnt agree more with lame a bit of respect would go a long way

A bit of help for someone whos already been shafted was called for, not some of the responses given. Prehaps if some of the posters practiced customer care on here, they might see an improvement in their profits in future!

No fighting chaps. Not on a Monday. Let's all get in the arms and a drink on croppies account.

I used to be in the TA and teach safety/skill at arms and would always remind recruits that a gun was what you find on the front of a ship, not in the hands of a soldier - that's a rifle. There was also classroom work involving pen and paper to be getting on with too.

Remember one lad couldn't for the life of him cock a Browning pistol, couldn't figure out if his technique was wrong or he just lacked basic strength.

some have long memory's lameplumber are you going to practice what you preach?

been doing my best and still on site at present, I dont think i ever tried to discourage people from joining this trade, more sarcastic to those in it and if i remember rightly advertiser/sponsers were my downfall 🙄 but i see the evidence has gone now!

no the evidence is clearly visible to a moderator, just watch what you post up

We've all got differences in opinions, that's life!

How it's interpreted by one is not necessarily how it was meant by another.

We are all guilty perhaps of being too hasty when reading peoples posts & immediately assuming the worst & becoming defensive.

This has obviously happened before & will no doubt happen again.

Tolerance & discretion are needed more at times, by those replying to original posts & those also joining in the thread.

This is a public forum, let's not make ourselves look like complete chumps.

I personally, whether others agree or not, fully support the work of the mods & admins & appreciate that their job is difficult enough as it is without us all jumping on each other kicking each other down.

I think threads will inevitably end in conflict on some occasion. If you take some one dead set in wanting to become a plumber and asking for advice, they are never going to be told "yeah, do it, it's brilliant and work is plentiful". They will be told its difficult and hard to get regular work.

This is where the problems start in all fairness. People don't like the truth, if someone really wants to become a plumber then this isn't the answer they want to hear, and fair enough. But it is still the correct answer to give. I have never seen a reply to a thread that I have thought to be nasty or hurtful in any way.

Ive seen answers that could have maybe been a little more thought out, but we are tradesmen not the poet laureate. Plus we all work within a trade where banter and in some case quite harsh banter is the norm.

Some replies need to be taken with a pinch of salt and forgotten as soon as they've been read.

When two parties disagree, things will 9 times out of 10 turn sour, especially in written text as no real emotion can be put across.

Very eloquently put Tom, a much more constructive use of your time! :smiley2:

If people are getting offended on a forum, then I really don't think plumbing is for them...
