Pipe squeezers - what do you use?

As per the title, I came across a house where there was no outside stopcock and Thames Water couldn't find it either. They reluctantly shut the street main down so I could bung a shutoff valve on, but the guy suggested that I could have squeezed the pipe.

Do you guys do this? Sounds a bit risky to me! The pipe was 22mm black plastic, LDPE I think. What squeezers do you use?

I bought one from suppliers works a treat
Just a sort of vice with sliding bar

this very similar to the one I use, they come in very handy , especially bursts on any plastic.

i did my own , get 2 small (8 inch maby rough guess) pieces of hollow steel tube and drill holes in them so a threaded bar will link them together so as you tighten they come closer, ill post a pic up . not very good at describing things!

i did have a propper one at one stage got it from toolstation but at the moment i am using a 8 inch G cramp and 2 peices off half moond timber flat side to the clamp round side onto the pipe works a treat

Easily, think draincenter stock them upto around 63 mm

Your description makes perfect sense, mate! Going to have a rummage around in the shed, I know I've got some steel tubing and threaded rod...

Toolstation > Hand Tools > Plumbers Tools > Squeeze Off Tool

I never got any, the idea just seemed wrong, possible damage to the pipe.
I suppose I am being overly cautious, does the pipe wall always just bounce back to where it was before?

i've never had any problems with them, the pipe just about returns back to the round afterwards, if not. just sqeeeze it back with your gland pliers.

I've only ever used it on poly that isn't very old. The pipe don't go back perfect but near enough.

i wouldn't risk it on old poly in case it decided to split.

bit risky mate using timber 😡 , if you must go the diy route, better to use metal

not something i keep with me all the time but i allways have some half moond timber and g clamps my propper one will be in the garage or shed somewere i think i have squeezed mains at the most 3 times this year

If that "G" clamp slips off I don't know what you will do Woody

Has anyone ever had a pipe split or burst when squeezing it? This pipe that I was looking at was at least 1970s. I wonder how flexible it still was? And if it did burst, I'd have been in deep, deep doodoo as there was no way of shutting the mains off at all... I can see that they'd be very useful, but I'm wondering how big a risk it really is??

You could try freezing it, no no please, I was only choking, don't squeeze too hard and take it slowly
