Bad news today my dog has to be put down tomorrow. It was suggested to be done today but as selfish as it is I wanted the opportunity to see him and say goodbye but also be there as he drifts off to sleep.

I rescued him 8 years ago now, I've seen him come from a mange riddled bag of bones that would hide behind the sofa if the doorbell rang. To a rather plump at times confident family pet. For the first three years it was just me and him. Really kept me company even used to split my Sunday roast with him. True to say he is mans best friend, well my best friend any way. Fair to say he has also been a little sod over the years but not a bad/aggressive bone in his body.

kids have really taken to him over the past 12 months especially. Lord knows how I'll begin to explain to a 3 year old where his doggy has gone. Did nothing but cry for 3 hours one day when pooch went to the groomers.

looks like a night on the sofa cuddled up with my buddy tonight. So sitting down and having a wee drink and a think, on all the times me and Sam have shared over the past eight years.

Im absolutely devastated but realise it's what's best for him and an unfortunate fact of life.

absolutely gutted for you Rob,they truly are mans best friend ,they ask for nothing but food and your unconditional love/walk time,so sorry to hear of your bad news, just try to make it comfortable for the pup

Mate know exactly what your feeling tonight broke my heart too all I can tell you is that is exactly the same as them falling asleep on the sofa, there is no "Last look into your eyes business" just so peaceful like.

Happy memories. Just sit next to him mate. Don't let him think you've left him. Took winston in August still makes me sad. ( it's also made me vegan)

Watched my mother go slowly downhill over 18 months with a brain turmour and if it was lawful the whole family would of agreed to spare her the suffering she had to endure at the end but we`re ok with our "extended" family. Strange.

Really sorry to hear about your dog gasman. I'd do anything for my pets and it never gets any easier saying goodbye to them. As a pet owner only you can decide when is the right time.

All the best,

Keiran.

Been in your shoes twice now Rob if it were up to me I dont think I would get another because of this awful heartache......but then my Mrs has other ideas planned for when she retires..chin up pal cuddle up and sup up ...Turnpin

The replacement one is not for him. It is for the 3yr old

Words can't describe the feeling but most of us who love dogs have been there. But I can't not have a dog. It was a year after losing honey the jack Russell, I but I had to get another just don't feel right not having man's best greeting me when I get home. Feel for you dude

So sorry for you and your family Rob. The time is coming when we will also have to say goodbye to Hobnob (AKA Gob****e). Getting old and ill but can't quite bring myself to face reality.

Raising a glass to you and Sam.

Sorry for you Rob. Sometimes it is for the best.

Get straight back out there, not a replacement, but ongoing. Our 2 year old husky has been ill, the last couple of days. Dont know what we would do without her.

When a family has love to give, its selfish not to spread that. May not seem that at the moment but longer term its tge right thing to do.

There are a lot of people who will say, 'well its only a pet', but its not like that. Condolencese for now, but life is better with a furry friend to share.

Had to deal with letting two of my own go Rob and its never easy, but it is probably for the best. A new addition would be a good distraction for the kids and probably for you too......chin up fella.

Like it! Take the 3yrs old along to help chose the next family member, but you have final say.

Rob, I'm so sorry, I just don't know what to say. All my thoughts with you and your family tomorrow, but just reflect for a moment on the better life that your dog has had because of you, and take a moment to share the joint pride.

So sorry to hear that, just need to try your best to explain to the kids, but not going to be easy, we have only had our dog since September and it's the first dog either me or the missus has ever had, and now that he's here I wouldn't be without him, as I work from home now he kicks about under my feet all day or sits on my lap while I'm working,

Had to do the same so many times, never easy and always emotional, seems to happen a lot when you take on rescued animals as well as they are always older when you get them.

Can you imagine a 3yr old child in a dog rescue center for an hour?
Let no man break that bond!
Could be a Christmas to remember.

Ps
You can look online nowadays.
Just search for your local rescue centres, their not all old, sis has had 2 for last 8yrs and still going strong, cant wait til the 21st to see all 3 of em, the boys make me smile with their antics. If one has the armchair then the other will go to the patio doors asking to go out then double back to the armchair once it is vacated. Anyone else got 2 that play mind games with each other?

worst part of owning a dog, every time i say thats it and then give in. Dogs are so good for children in so many ways and the joy of a youngster getting a puppy will help

So sorry to here this. We've been through it many times and it never gets easier. The last act of love for your dog is to ease his or her suffering.

Rob, the lads above have said it all pal, so sorry to hear this.
i think your little one will cope better than you, don't worry about him , he will be ok.
just make sure you will cope, if he sees you upset , he will be.
