REDSAW

went to see a job friday for some Greek bird, water coming down kitchen ceiling. what appeared to be a typical 'builder' install of shower in student accommodation. it appeared that caulk was used to seal the tray (inadequately) and the report from the 'customer' was that it had been done 3 times and still leaking so want it done right!!.

told her that it will have to be raked out and resealed with the proper stuff all round, i will also check the bath underneath in the adjacent room too, so looking at about 3 hours + materials....

what would you charge? mine was £35ph x 3 +£15 for silicone and stuff = £120

she text me this morning 2 hours before job time and said..
got another quote from legit plumber advertising in the same place as she got my number but he has quoted her £50?,(must think were on the same rate as Greece?)

only problem he is too busy to do it soon, i think your price is too steep and was wondering if you can do it for £70 (£20 extra because you can do it straight away)?.

3 texts later i eventually told her to swing:auto:

tell you what cheesin me off, if i got a call and diagnosed over the phone as another plumber has said it needs sealing then i would of done it for £50... slap a bit over the existing silicone 3/4 hour £50 please!!!

the guys not even been to the job!.

I always strip before a re-seal. Takes flamin' ages and does my head in, wont do it for nowt though! Other guys gonna use the cheapest chalk filled silicone he can find and probably whack it over the caulk. Good luck to her lol

Really Rog. You've never had anyone haggle you down??

Redoing the silicon on bath/shower is a horrible task. Cutting all the old crap out. Miserable job. I did one last year. Took two hours. £50 per hour plus silicon. My usual rate, why should I do a crap job for less, even if it is dull?

Her last choice of tradesman used painters mate to seal a shower. So it's clear she's a bad judge of character. I think you dodged a bullet. Like someone who haggles after the job type of bullet.

Haggle with me before the job, I don't care one jot. I haggle with people. Haggle with me after it's agreed and done, and I will lose my rag!

I'm a bugger when people try to haggle with me. They offer me half I tell them double, basically matching their haggle in the opposite direction and always in my favour.

Always seem to end up with what I wanted in the first place.

does anybody use them silicone spoons they used to sell in. gulp b & q. they have been my savior and i actually dont mind siliconing anymore ! hate the ragging out, but never had a better finish putting it back in again. and now only ever use the silicone of gods.
but the finishing tool takes my old wet and soapy finger to a new level !

OP, price goes up every time she asks for discount and the quote on where she'd like to save the money materials or workmanship is excellent. bible material.

I find a wooden lolly stick dipped in a light mix of washing up liquid and water gives a superb finish when using Dow Corning.
